Cammie Petree
Volleyball Coach
Cammie (Walrath) Petree returned to the McMurry
University campus as an instructor in 1994. Two years later she
landed the head volleyball coaching job, and last season Petree
earned American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year honors
when she led the Lady Indians to their first ever conference
championship.
Petree is no stranger to the Lady Indian program, however. She had previously coached the team for two seasons in 1984-85 before her return. A 1983 graduate of McMurry, she was also one of just a few four-time all-conference players ever to play in the TIAA. She was named the Lady Indians MVP twice and the teams most inspirational once. She served as team captain and was named the Greater McMurry Indian Clubs Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Student Athlete in 1982-83.
Born in Durango, Colorado, Petree graduated as valedictorian from Santa Fe (N.M.) High School in 1979, after lettering in volleyball, basketball, track, and softball. She was a starter on the schools state championship volleyball team and also was an all-state choir performer.
As a student at McMurry, Petree was a four-year member of the National Deans List and the McMurry University Deans List. She was voted class favorite her sophomore and senior years and received the Ginny Carlson Award for outstanding senior woman. She is an active member of the Big Country Emmaus Community and First United Methodist Church of Abilene. Petree earned her M.Ed. in physical education in 1996 from Hardin-Simmons University. She is married to Richard Petree and is the mother of Megan, age 6. (top of page)
It isnt very often when an athletic program can claim perfection, but the 1997 McMurry Lady Indian volleyball team left no room for improvement by their successors. The Lady Indians rolled to an unprecedented 12-0 record and 36-0 game record in claiming their first-ever American Southwest Conference championship. McMurry faces an uphill battle to defend the crown in 1998, however, since only five lettermen and two starters return from last years squad. Nevertheless, head coach Cammie Petree is optimistic about the Lady Indians chances.
Gone from the mix are ASC co-MVPs Tracee Nielsenwho will assist Petree this yearand Mandy Findley. Together they formed one of the most effective combinations in McMurry history. In addition to Nielsen and Findley, the Lady Indians also lost two-year starters Amy Jo Williams and Shaynna Higley. As a result, Petree will depend heavily on her returning players to provide the leadership necessary to adapt the newcomers quickly to the college game. Playing in McMurrys familiar 5-1 style, Melissa Cole and Sabrina Griffin will be back in the starting lineup, and Becky Trinidad will join them after playing as a reserve last season. Kelly Clay and Randie Brannon also return after seeing limited playing time last year.
Petree will look to nine newcomers to fill any lineup openings throughout the season. The top newcomers include Hollie Smith, Shelly Hammit, and Natalie Woodring. Hammit, a transfer from Frank Phillips Junior College, was named her teams offensive Player of the Year in both 1996 and 1997. Smith, an outside hitter, claimed District 8-4A defensive MVP and all-state honors in 1996 for Springtown High School. Also joining the Lady Indians in 1998 will be freshmen Amanda Findley, Jennifer McGee, LaSenda Robinson, Sunni Shore, Sarah Whitehead, and Keva Glovier.
Despite the Lady Indians youth, Petree says the teams goal will be to repeat as conference champions. The road to the title defense will take an unfamiliar route this season, though, as the ASC has split into East and West Divisions. Under the new format, the top two teams from each division will meet in a postseason tournament hosted by the West Division champion in even years and the East Divsion champion in odd years.
To account for her teams inexperience, Petree has scheduled three tough tournaments to open the 1998 season. The Lady Indians will travel to the Southwestern Invitational, the Austin College Classic, and the Pikes Peak Challenge before diving into ASC play. (top of page)
