Bob Howard
Volleyball Coach
Coach, educator and author are just
a few of the titles that describe new Mountaineer volleyball
leader Bob Howard.
Howard takes over a Schreiner volleyball program latent with talent and exuberance and youth. Last years squad, boasting six underclass starters (three freshmen, three sophomores) finished the season with a 7-7 record, with several wins coming against Division I and II competition.
With this foundation in tact, Howard is confident that the 1998 season will be even more exciting.
Howard has been coaching volleyball for more than 20 years, primarily in California, but also in Illinois, Tennessee and Oregon. He has coached both mens and womens collegiate volleyball, Junior Olympic club ball, and at the high school level. His book, "The Fundamental Contacts of Volleyball" was published in 1995.
Howard has earned his bachelor, masters and doctorate degrees in physical education. In addition to coaching the Schreiner College volleyball team, Howard teaches in the department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER), and as well as heading up the department of Campus Recreation. The past season was one of change for the Schreiner College volleyball team. Completing the transition to NCAA Division III, joining the American Southwest Conference and the hiring of a new coach in January has raised a lot of questions for the 1998 season, but Bob Howard is optimistic that change will bring success.
The Mountaineers will use a new offense and defense this season and players have spent much of the off season studying and adapting to the new systems. The team showed steady improvement in the four tournaments it played this spring and finished the non-traditional season at 7-7. Opponents included teams from all three NCAA divisions.
All six starters from 1997 return but everyone is new to Howard's offense and defense systems. Starting three freshmen and three sophomores saw youth and inexperience plague the team. But with a year under their belts, these problems should be limited.
Junior Amy Ford, a 1997 Heart of Texas second-team All-Conference pick, returns as Schreiners go-to player at outside hitter. Ford, president of the senior class, was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball, basketball and track at Freer High School and brings great athleticism to the vital outside hitter spot.
She is joined on the frontline by junior Julie Winters, a strong hitter and blocker, skills pivotal to the middle position. At 5-11, Winter is one of the taller players on the team. Splitting time with Winters in the middle is junior Angie Clifton, a force at 6-feet-2. She doubles as the starting center on Schreiners womens basketball team. Both are smart players, having earned the distinction of being named to Schreiners Deans List. (top of page)
