Ruth McWilliams
Volleyball Coach
Ruth McWilliams returned to her
alma mater in 1997 and succeeded her
former coach in the Sul Ross volleyball program. Following a
nine-year stint as head coach at Fort Davis High School - where
her teams compiled a 165-86 record - McWilliams directed the Lady
Lobos to an 8-20 finish last season. She replaced her collegiate
coach, Kay Whitley, now the Sul Ross athletic director.
A native of Marfa, McWilliams received a bachelor’s degree from Sul Ross in 1980 and a master’s degree in 1990. She taught earth science, biology, math, and physical education at Fort Davis from 1986-97, while coaching at various levels in volleyball, basketball and tennis.
While at Fort Davis, her volleyball teams won seven district, six area and three regional championships, with three state semi-final appearances. McWilliams and her husband Brent have four children, O’Lita, Zane, Ryan, and Leah. (top of page)
Second-year coach Ruth McWilliams hopes to reap the benefits from last season's youth movement. The combination of experience and familiarity with here system will hopefully help Sul Ross State University's volleyball team show marked improvement.
During McWilliams' inaugural season, the Lobos posted an 8-20 record, but return eight of 14 letterwinners, including three starters. Some impressive recruits lead to further optimism. Sul Ross' 1997 varsity roster included eight freshmen, five who are expected to return.
Leading the way are junior outside hitter Dioni Uriquidez, who earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors last season, and senior middle blockers Joanie Jackson and Amy White. These returning starts will be joined by sophomore setter Raquel Hernandez, outside hitters Marisol Cervantez and Stefani Andrews, and middle blocker Michelle Osborn.
Incoming prospects include Adana Martinez, Terry Hernandez, Lisa Haley, LaGwenna Morrow, Audrey Glasscock, Amanda Huff and Araceli De La Fuente.(top of page)
