UT Tyler Men Fall in Regional Final, 5-1

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – After winning its first two matches to advance to the regional finals at Pauley Tennis Complex, the UT Tyler men's tennis team was knocked off by No. 8 Carnegie Mellon on its home courts Saturday, 5-1, to eliminate the Patriots from the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships.

UT Tyler ends the year at 16-7 overall in advancing to the Round of 16 for the first time in program history, while CMU improved to 21-5 and will move on to the NCAA Quarterfinals in Oberlin, Ohio, for the first time in school history.

CMU won 2 of 3 doubles points to take an early 2-1 lead in the match, with the Patriots' lone win coming in a hard-fought 9-8 (7-1) win by Josh Chavez and Adam Chirhart at the No. 3 position.

The Tartans then got closeout wins at No's 5, 3 and 4 singles in straight-sets that closed out the 5-1 victory. David Ashlock and Austin Gonzales each led in their respective matches when the match was called.

Ashlock and doubles teammate Andrew Reznik will represent UT Tyler in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships that will be held May 28-30 at Oberlin College in Ohio. The duo is one of 16 teams vying for a championship.
