RICHARDSON, Texas –– Junior utility player/catcher Collin Janssen and sophomore right-handed Colin Butschek of Concordia Texas, junior second baseman Jordan Marks of Louisiana College and senior right-hander Chad Sherman of Texas-Tyler all earned top individual honors to highlight the 2011 American Southwest Conference baseball awards, following a division-only vote by head coaches, the conference office announced on Monday (May 9).
Janssen (Bryan, TX / Temple College) was named West Division Player of the Year after batting .373 with one home run, one triple, 11 doubles and 25 RBIs. The 6-4, 220-pound backstop also threw out a league-high 15 would-be base stealers, scored 31 runs and walked 21 times. In addition, he went 2-1 on the mound.
Butschek (Lake Travis, TX / LTHS) was named West Division Pitcher of the Year after going 8-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 60 strikeouts. The 6-3, 165-pound righty walked just 15 batters over 88 2/3 innings of work and his win total was best in the division.
Janssen and Butschek led Concordia Texas to conference and division titles.
Marks (Alexandria, LA / LSU-Alexandria) was named East Division Player of the Year after batting .340 with 10 home runs and a conference-high 55 RBIs. The 5-9, 175-pound infielder also totaled 12 doubles, one triple, 33 walks and scored 46 times. He committed just two errors and led the Wildcats to the ASC tournament.
Sherman (Bullard, TX / Texas A&M) was named East Division Pitcher of the Year after going 8-1 with a league-low 1.49 ERA. The 6-5, 205-pound right-handed transfer was also tops in the conference by striking out 95 batters over 72 2/3 innings of work. He hurled three complete-game shutouts and fueled a division crown.
All four were first team selections in their respective divisions.
Other West Division award winners were Hardin-Simmons junior right-hander James Simmons (Abilene, TX / Cisco), who was named newcomer of the year after going 7-3 with seven saves. HSU catcher Cody Jarboe (Houston, TX / Spring Woods HS) batted .343 and was named freshman of the year. Mary Hardin-Baylor junior third baseman Josh Fredrick (Troy, TX / THS) was voted the division’s sportsmanship athlete of the year.
Other East Division award winners were LeTourneau left-handed pitcher/first baseman Garrett Methvin (Longview, TX / Arkansas), who was tabbed newcomer of the year after posting a 2.40 ERA on the mound and a .372 batting average at the plate. Louisiana College freshman right-hander Cole Prejean (Brusly, LA / BHS) went 8-2 to take top freshman honors. East Texas Baptist University senior first baseman Ryan Yezak (Snook, TX / Brazos Christian HS) was voted the division’s sportsmanship athlete of the year for the second straight year.
Hardin-Simmons (Steve Coleman, Brad Holcomb) earned the West Division coaching staff of the year award, while LeTourneau (Robin Harriss, Aaron Gentry), Louisiana College (Mike Byrnes, Matt Byrnes, James Halle, Andrew Shelton) and Texas-Tyler (Paul Wyczawski, Josh Dickerson, Paige Hodges) shared the honor in the East. HSU earned the top seed in the West, LETU posted its most wins (19) since 2003, LC improved nine by victories from 2010 and UT Tyler claimed the East title for the fifth straight season.
