HITTER OF THE WEEK – Chase Burrow, OF, Jr., Mary Hardin-Baylor
Junior outfielder Chase Burrow (Groesbeck, Texas/Groesbeck HS) ent 11-for-19 at the plate for a .579 average and slugged 1.000 over four Cru wins last week. In game three of the Louisiana College series, Burrow tied the ASC record for most hits in a single game going 6-for-6, driving in six runs and scoring five runs in a 17-16 win. Burrow had two home runs, including a walk-off solo shot with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning. He drove in eight total runs and scored 11 more. Burrow is the eighth ASC player overall to record six hits in a game and the first since Jordan Dotson of Hardin-Simmons (2010). Burrow is the third UMHB player with six hits in a game joining former Cru players Adam Froeschl (2007) and Joseph Villegas (2008).
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Cason Adams, RHP, So., Texas-Tyler
Sophomore pitcher Cason Adams (Rockwall, Texas/Rockwall HS) was historic in his outing last Saturday against Hardin-Simmons, throwing the second no-hitter in program history. Adams was nearly perfect, retiring 21 of 23 batters, allowing just two walks in seven innings on the mound and struck out nine batters in the team's 4-0 win. The no-no was the first by a Patriots’ pitcher since Kevin Dutcher (2006) blanked Paul Quinn, 10-0.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES AT THE PLATE
Concordia Texas junior catcher Gareth Hutton (Georgetown, Texas/St. Andrews Episcopal School) hit .500 in last weekend's series victory. He drove in the only run in the Tornados' 1-0 triumph over LeTourneau in the series opener last Friday. Hutton also scored a run in Saturday's 3-0 win to help Concordia clinch the series.
East Texas Baptist junior short stop Dynas Doud (Adel, Iowa/Grimes HS) has recorded at least one hit in 12 of his last 13-games. His 11-game hitting streak was ended in the first game on Saturday against Howard Payne. In the final game of series against HPU, Doud went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. In his final at bat Doud had an RBI single that scored an insurance run to make it 5-3. He also homered in the fourth inning to tie the game (1-1). Doud posted a RBI in every game played last week.
Howard Payne senior catcher Jake Sadler (Liberty Hill, Texas/Liberty Hill HS) was 2-for-4 from the plate in each win over Hardin-Simmons to help the Jackets to a series win. Sadler also went 3-for-4 from the plate in the series opener against East Texas Baptist. He was 8-for-19 overall through five games played for HPU with a .450 on-base percentage and a .579 slugging percentage.
LeTourneau junior catcher Dillon Yates (Waxahachie, Texas/Waxahachie HS) led the LETU offense with a .417 batting average in the four games, last week. Yates shared in the team lead with five hits and scored twice. Two of his five hits were home runs. Yates had multiple hits in the game against Wiley College (Mar. 25) and in the series finale against No. 18/20 Concordia Texas (Mar. 28).
Louisiana College freshman outfielder Sully Martin (Paulina, La./Lutcher HS) was the fire starter at the top of LC's lineup during a successful offensive weekend for the Wildcats. Martin collected seven hits in his 15 at-bats (.466) and stole two bases while scoring five runs from the leadoff spot. He led a LC lineup that scored 26 runs in three games against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Sul Ross State senior short stop Josh Vasquez (Lubbock, Texas/Frenship HS) led the Lobos in hitting as they swept a three-game conference series from Texas Dallas. Vasquez had two hits, including a double, in Friday night's opener and he doubled in the seventh inning and scored an insurance run. He went 3-for-3 in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader as the Lobos won, 3-2. Vasquez singled in the first inning, stole second, took third on an error and scored on a sac fly to put SRSU up, 1-0. His second-inning single drove in the eventual winning run.
Texas Dallas senior catcher Micah Easterling (Denton, Texas/Ponder HS) went 4-for-6 from the plate in the Comets' series at Sul Ross State, doing most of his damage in the series finale. In the final game with the Lobos, Easterling was 3-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt, scoring a pair of runs in a 6-4 loss. He went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored the series opener and then served as a pinch runner in game two.
Texas-Tyler sophomore outfielder Blake Bonnin (Baytown, Texas/Barbers Hill HS) helped lead the Patriots to a perfect week in a three-game sweep of Hardin-Simmons. Bonnin led the team in average (.600), RBI (3), hits (6), runs scored (5), doubles (2), home runs (1) and total bases (11). He also struck out just once, and sported a .636 on-base percentage.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES ON THE MOUND
Concordia Texas senior pitcher Cameron Cox (Round Rock, Texas/Stony Point HS) pushed his record to 7-0 with a 3-0 win over LeTourneau to clinch the series last Saturday. The right-hander logged his fifth consecutive complete game and nation-leading fourth shutout of the season. He scattered six hits and struck out seven. Cox has not allowed an earned run in his last 41.2 innings of work, and the opposition only has scored one time (unearned) in that span. He also was inserted into the batting lineup in the series finale and posted two hits.
East Texas Baptist senior pitcher Kirby Moore (Minden, La./Minden HS) recorded the longest outing of his career as he retired the side four times in a nine-inning 5-3 win over Howard Payne. He tied his career high of six strike outs and only gave up one extra base hit and allowed just two walks. ETBU had the lead entire game but HPU pulled within one (4-3) in the eighth inning. A dropped third strike followed by two hits gave HPU two runs before a fly out finished the inning. In ninth inning with a two-run lead (5-3), Moore had a fly out, strike out and ground out along with one hit to pick up his third win of the year.
Howard Payne sophomore pitcher Kyle Ramon (San Antonio, Texas/East Central HS) recorded 11 strike outs in just 7.1 innings of relief work for HPU. Ramon recorded two saves in the two victories over Hardin-Simmons. He held batters to a .120 batting average while recording a 1.23 ERA for the week.
LeTourneau senior pitcher Justin Jenkins (Hallsville, Texas/Hallsville HS) was dominant in his two appearances last week. He started the week striking out the side in an inning of relief against Wiley College and followed that up with 13 strikeouts in a complete game win over No. 18/20 Concordia Texas. Against the Tornados, he scattered seven hits and walked just one. It was his fourth-straight start where he struck out at least 10 batters.
Mary Hardin-Baylor junior pitcher Aaron Barteau (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch HS) was dominating in a 6-3 victory over Louisiana College. Barteau recorded 12 strike outs, did not allow a run in seven innings and scattered three hits improving his record to 4-0 on the season.
Sul Ross State sophomore pitcher Colton West (Stockdale, Texas/Stockdale HS) pitched two scoreless innings and earned two saves in the first two games of the Lobos' series against Texas Dallas. West entered in the ninth inning of the opener with a 7-4 lead and retired the side in order. Saturday, he took the mound in the top of the seventh and final inning of the first game of the doubleheader and faced three batters, walking one and inducing a double play to preserve the Lobo’s 3-2 win. West has not lost a save opportunity this year (3-for-3) and has a 0.00 ERA this season.
Texas Dallas junior pitcher Brandon Lee (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill School) did not allow an earned run in a 3-2 loss to Sul Ross State in the second of three games for UTD. Lee tossed 6.0 innings, striking out two, giving up just five hits.
