HITTER OF THE WEEK – Trenton Buchhorn, Jr., INF, Texas-Tyler
Junior infielder Trenton Buchhorn (Arlington, Texas / Martin HS) continued his strong start to the season going 5-for-12 (.417) with seven RBI in a three-game sweep last weekend of Mary Hardin-Baylor at Irwin Field. Buchhorn had two doubles and a triple during the three-game sweep and scored three runs against the Cru as the Patriots improved to 9-3 on the season.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Aaron Bach, Sr., RHP, Texas Dallas
Senior pitcher Aaron Bach (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire HS) recorded the second nine-inning complete game of his career Thursday as he pitched the Comets to a 4-1 road win over Texas Wesleyan. Bach scattered seven hits, not allowing more than one hit in any inning, as he gave up just a single unearned run in the victory. Bach had one strike out and did not issue a walk as he improved to 2-1 on the season.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES AT THE PLATE
Belhaven senior designated hitter Adam Kowalczyk (Marshall, Va. / Fauquier HS) recorded a hit in each of the three games against McMurry in Abilene. In game one of the doubleheader on Friday Kowalczyk recorded two doubles. For the week, he posted a .462 (6-for-13) batting average, drove in one RBI and scored three times. His .692 slugging percentage is seventh-best in the ASC.
Concordia Texas junior third baseman Colton Poindexter (Humble, Texas / Atascosita HS) hit the Tornados’ first home run of the season with a three-run bomb in the top of the 10th inning to give Concordia the win at Southwestern. Poindexter went 3-for-4 in the opener of Saturday's twin bill with three RBI and two runs scored.
East Texas Baptist senior outfielder Tyler Bates (Joshua, Texas / Alvarado HS) had another strong weekend at the plate hitting two home runs, with five RBI and scoring six times. In the final game of the series, he had two home runs for five RBI. It is the second time this year he has hit two home runs in one game. In the game one 10-8 win, Bates scored three times and had two hits. In the sixth inning, he came scored the winning run on a wild pitch to make it 8-7. In the final game of the series in his first at-bat he hit a solo shot for a 1-0 lead. Bates then hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to make it 9-1 to put the game out of reach for Ozarks.
Hardin-Simmons senior first baseman Colson Craddick (Lubbock, Texas / Monterey HS) had a big week in the middle of the Cowboy order with five hits, three for extra bases including a home run, two doubles and drove in six runs in a series at LeTourneau. Craddick also walked twice and had a sac fly. He drove in all four runs in the 5-4 loss on Saturday in the first game with a three-run home run and an RBI double.
Howard Payne senior short stop Brandon Garrett (Dipping Springs, Texas / Dipping Springs HS) went 7-of-14 from the plate over four games including a 4-for-4 performance with two stolen bases in a victory over McMurry. Garrett scored seven times and had 10 total bases for the week.
LeTourneau senior outfielder Sean Sellers (Arlington, Texas / Woodville, Wash. HS) hit a team best .538 to lead the YellowJackets to the series victory over Hardin-Simmons to begin ASC play. Sellers had a team-high seven hits including three doubles and 10 total bases, plus he scored twice and had an RBI. In all three games, Sellers had multiple hits including a season-high three in the series finale against the Cowboys.
Louisiana College sophomore outfielder Sully Martin (Paulina, La. / Lutcher HS) continues to be a strong presence as a leadoff hitter and getting on base to lead the Wildcat offense. Martin currently has 12 stolen bases on the year and in game three of the series against Howard Payne (Feb. 27), Martin tied the ASC record for most stolen bases in a game with four steals. Martin is the first player in ASC history to record four steals in two separate games. Martin also stole four bags last season against Hardin-Simmons.
Mary Hardin-Baylor junior shortstop Dakota Parsons (Conroe, Texas / College Park HS) hit .444 and had a pair of multi-hit games. He drove in three runs and scored four more while slugging .667 over four contests.
Ozarks junior outfielder Andrew Beck (Conway, Ark. / St. Joseph HS) went 9-of-15 with six RBI over four games. In a win over Hendrix College Beck homered and drove in three runs. In a comeback victory over East Texas Baptist, he scored the game-tying run. Beck averaged .600 for the week, and he has hit safely in 10-of-12 games this season.
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES ON THE MOUND
Belhaven senior pitcher Tanner Cable (Southaven, Miss. / Southaven HS) pitched eight strong innings in the second game of the doubleheader against McMurry on Friday. Cable allowed only two hits, one unearned run and three walks, while striking out 14 batters on 102 pitches. In two starts with the Blazers, Cable has posted a 2-0 record with a 2.57 ERA, good for eighth in the ASC. He has fanned 26 batters in two starts, which is tied for the lead in the ASC. He has also posted a .140 batting average against, which is tops in the ASC.
Concordia Texas senior pitcher Josh Smith (Conroe, Texas / Temple JC) had good starts in both appearances last week but walked away without a decision in either contest. Against Southwestern, he surrendered just one earned run on four hits in six innings and recorded 10 strike outs.
East Texas Baptist freshman pitcher Cody Pierce (Kennard, Texas / Kennard HS) went six of eight innings in a shortened game due to the score and had six strikeouts. In the third inning with two on and no outs, he struck out two straight batters with the final batter grounding out to get out of the jam.
Howard Payne junior pitcher Kyle Ramon (San Antonio, Texas / East Central HS) went 6.0 innings in a start against Louisiana College. Ramon struck out nine in the no decision allowing three runs on six hits.
LeTourneau junior pitcher Jordan Carns (Sierra Vista, Arizona / Cochise College) picked up the win in the series opener for the YellowJackets. He pitched 7.2 innings allowing 12 hits with only two going for extra bases. Carns struck out three and gave up just two earned runs.
Texas-Tyler senior pitcher Michael Blevins (Houston, Texas / Mayde Creek HS) closed out the final game of the three-game sweep of Mary Hardin-Baylor last weekend with eight strike outs in seven innings on the mound in the series finale. Blevins scattered five hits during his fourth start of the season and allowed only one earned run in the win. Blevins walked only one during the outing and enters the fifth week of the regular season with 22 strikeouts in 20 2/2 innings of work.
