All-Time ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor winners
RICHARDSON, Texas –– Twenty-four graduating student-athletes from the 12 American Southwest Conference member institutions are honored by the conference and their institutions as 2020-21 ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor recipients.
The ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor is presented to one male and one female member of the graduating class who has compiled the most outstanding record in academics, athletics and leadership over their collegiate career. The award is presented annually by the Faculty Athletics Representative at each conference member institution.
Recipients of the 2020-21 ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor represent 12 different conference sports and include individuals who graduated with academic honors, hold admission to graduate-level programs, are members of academic honor societies and campus organizations; competed on national, conference or division title teams; earned Academic All-America, ASC All-Academic, Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and All-Conference honors; and who served as volunteers, tutors and mentors within the campus and the community.

BELHAVEN UNIVERSITY
Ian Requilman | Accounting | Soccer| Plano, Texas
Ian Requilman was a four-year leader for the men's soccer program, logging 51 starts in 55 appearances. A midfielder, he logged 3,518 minutes of career playing time with 4 goals scored and 3 assists. He provided consistency and stability in the Blazers' lineup as the team earned ASC Men's Soccer Championship Tournament berths in the University's first two years of active NCAA membership (2019-20, 2020-21). Requilman was active in community service through Tops Soccer and In His Steps Ministries, and also worked internships at Jackson-area CPA firms to enhance his educational experience. A Dean's List student, he finished his undergraduate studies with a 3.68 GPA. Ian is now pursuing his MBA at Belhaven University while studying for the CPA exam.
Ashley Langham | Business Administration | Soccer | Florence, Miss.
Ashley Langham joined the women's soccer program following a two-year stint at East Mississippi Community College, immediately establishing herself as a leader both on and off the pitch. Twice selected by her teammates as captain, Langham led teams who earned berths in the ASC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament in the University's first two years of active NCAA membership (2019-20, 2020-21). Those two squads also finished with back-to-back winning seasons, a first for the program since 2008-2009. She was selected as Second Team ASC All-Conference and was named ASC Player of the Week in 2019 for her hat trick performance in an OT win versus Huntingdon College. For her career, she recorded 12 goals and five assists in 2,547 minutes. A Dean's List student, Langham completed her undergraduate degree with a 3.86 GPA.
CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY TEXAS
Joel Abrego | Kinesiology | Soccer | Houston, Texas
Joel Abrego is a two-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection during his academic career at Concordia, finishing with a cumulative 3.88 GPA while obtaining a degree in kinesiology. Meanwhile, on the field, Abrego has made an impact, finishing his four-year career as the program's all-time assists leader with 17 in 63 games played. In 2018, he set the school's single-season assists record, tallying eight total. He also scored eight goals in his career and knocked in four game-winners. He helped the Tornados reach the ASC Championship Tournament in all four seasons, including back-to-back finals appearances in 2019 and 2020-21. He is a three-time All-ASC selection, earning ASC Second Team honors in the past two seasons for his play
Bayli Luke | Biology | Track & Field | Houston, Texas
Bayli Luke was an academic stud in the classroom, finishing her undergrad career with an impressive 4.0 cumulative GPA while earning a degree in Biology. For her academic prowess, she was an ASC Academic All-Conference selection in 2019 and 2020 as well as being an chosen to the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team for track and field. Meanwhile, on the track, Luke has etched her name into the school's record books, finishing her career with the program record in the long jump, set in 2018, as well as the 400m dash, set in 2021. She has broken the school's 400m dash record three times in her career, most recently setting the current mark at the ASC Championships. For her performances at the conference meets, which included a pair of runner-up finishes in the 400 in 2019 and 2021, she was an All-ASC selection. Luke qualified for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 400 meter dash and was the Elite 90 winner.
EAST TEXAS BAPTIST UNIVERSITY
Riley Griffin | Marketing | Golf | Beach City, Texas
Hailing from Beach City, Texas, Riley Griffin has been a part of ETBU’s men’s golf team since its inception in 2018. He has recorded three top 10 finishes, including seventh place finishes in both the Hal Sutton Invitational and ASC Fall Tournament. He was part of the program’s first-ever tournament win at the Hal Sutton Invitational in March 2019. In fall 2019, he was named to the All-ASC Fall Tournament team. Sporting a 4.0 cumulative GPA, Riley is also a two-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection, a member of the chapel worship team, and a resident assistant.
Raegan Kappler | Business | Soccer | McKinney, Texas
A native of McKinney, Texas, Raegan Kappler has been a member of the East Texas Baptist University women’s soccer team the past four years while maintaining a 4.0 cumulative GPA. Throughout her career, she has compiled 10 goals and 14 assists while helping lead ETBU to 34 wins and three ASC Tournament appearances. She was also a two-time All-ASC 3rd team member and was named Academic All-Conference twice. This past season, she helped contribute to ETBU’s run in the ASC Tournament, with the Tigers reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 2005. During the season, Kappler scored two goals and recorded an assist, helping ETBU finish 6-2-2. She has also been heavily involved with ETBU FCA and on the leadership team.
HARDIN-SIMMONS UNIVERSITY
Trevor Doege | Biology | Football | Monahans, Texas
Trevor Doege earns the male Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor for Hardin-Simmons after finishing with a 3.91 GPA as a Biology major. He played tight end on the Cowboy football team and was a three-year varsity letterman and will be a three-time Academic All-ASC selection. He will be going to medical school in the fall. His older sister Kara, who played on the HSU golf team, won the HSU female Scholar Athlete-Medal in 2016.
Karlie Knapek | Exercise Science | Volleyball | Hutto, Texas
Karlie Knapek is the Hardin-Simmons female Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor winner. She is a four-year lettermen on the volleyball team and graduated with a 3.97 GPA as an Exercise Science major. She was second in the American Southwest Conference in digs this season. She was named second team All-ASC West Division.
HOWARD PAYNE UNIVERSITY
Matthew Martin | Kinesiology | Football | Leander, Texas
Matthew Martin was a four-year letterman on the HPU football team. His 3.92 grade point average earned him three Academic All-Conference selections. He was an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is preparing for a career in the coaching profession.
Morgan Patterson | Biomedical Science | Soccer | Kerrville, Texas
Morgan Patterson is a true representative of the scholar-athlete. She competed in 33 soccer matches in her career at HPU. She scored at a 40% shot-to-goal ratio. Her classroom success is reflected in her 3.93 GPA in Biomedical Science, which made her a three-time Academic All-Conference selection. She was also the President of the HPU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She has been accepted into the Texas A&M Veterinary School to fulfill her goal to be a veterinarian.
LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY
Eric Smith | Civil Engineering | Soccer | Tucson, Ariz.
Eric Smith was the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year and a Third Team All-Conference selection as a senior. He has a 3.99 GPA while majoring in Civil Engineering, earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. Smith was the team captain for three seasons and the men’s soccer representative to the LeTourneau Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He was a four-year starter at defender, scoring three goals with one assist and earned Defensive Player of the Week and Academic All-Conference accolades. Smith worked to build a concrete 3D-printer with the Civil Engineering Senior Design Team and also earned entry into the Engineering Honors Society. He has been involved at the Hope Community Church. Smith has several graduate degree scholarship and job offers.
Bari Schunicht | Biomedical Engineering | Cross Country/Track & Field | Spring, Texas
Bari Schunicht graduated with a 3.87 GPA in Biomedical Engineering. She played one year of soccer, ran cross country and compete in track & field. Schunicht served as campus peer advisor and worked IDEA lab as a STEM technician. She has been accepted to Washington University-St. Louis physical therapy program.
LOUISIANA COLLEGE
Isaiah Romero | Management & Marketing | Football| New Iberia, La.
Isaiah Romero worked himself into a starting role along the Louisiana College offensive line for two years, all while maintaining a spot as an Academic All-Conference member for two years as well.
Alexis Lege | Nursing | Basketball | Erath, La.
A two-year starter, Alexis Lege is described as being consistent in her work with a high work ethic. She was a leader both on and off the court, especially in the locker room as an emotional leader, and did so all while working through the arduous nursing program at Louisiana College.
UNIVERISTY OF MARY HARDIN-BAYLOR
Steven Sellers | Management and Economics | Football | Murphy, Texas
Steven Sellers is an All-American and two-time Academic All-American. He is a two-time ASC Offensive Lineman of the Year and has played for three ASC Champions and a National Champion in his career. Sellers is a three-time ASC All-Conference selection and three-time ASC Academic All-Conference pick. He was a three-year starter at center and was a member of the football program's Unity Council. Sellers has also been active in multiple community service projects and mentorship programs with his teammates. He is an ASC Football Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and will graduate with a 4.00 GPA as a double major in management and economics.
Annie Hasselbach | Interdisciplinary Studies | Golf | Rockdale, Texas
Annie Hasselbach will be a four-time WGCA All-American Scholar-Athlete and a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection. She has a stroke average of 83.50 this season and won individual medalist honors at the ETBU Fall Tiger Classic. Hasselbach has played for two ASC Champions and appeared in two NCAA Division III National Championships. She is also active as a mentor in the sport management program and has participated in numerous community service projects on campus. Hasselbach has also participated in the Folds of Honor campaign with her teammates this spring. She will graduate with a 4.00 GPA.
MCMURRY UNIVERSITY
Juan Ramirez | Sociology | Football | Roma, Texas
Senior Juan Ramirez graduated in December 2020 with plans to play football for McMurry in the fall before the COVID-19 pandemic, but instead opted to graduate and begin his work career. A three-year starter on the offensive line, he majored in criminology and minored in sociology, graduating summa cum laude with a perfect 4.0 GPA from wire-to-wire. He was a graduate of the university honors program. As a player, Ramirez played in 17 games as an offensive tackle, earned the 2020 Male Comeback Player of the Year award for McMurry Athletics, won the 2019 Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Award for football and earned academic all-conference each year he was eligible.
Claire Hillyer | Graphic Design | Tennis | Borger, Texas
Claire Hillyer won the ASC Women's Tennis West Division Most Valuable Player this season, finishing with a perfect 4-0 record in conference games at No. 1 singles. She was a First Team All-Conference selection and three-time All-Division selection. Hillyer graduated in May with a 3.97 GPA, including a perfect 4.0 GPA in her final semester.
UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS
Logan Valestin |Biology | Soccer | Bryant, Ark.
Logan Valestin, a senior member of the soccer team, was named the American Southwest Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and made the All-ASC First Team. He was named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-South Region Team. He ranked fourth in the ASC in goals against average (0.94) while collecting 22 saves in 12 starts. Valestin posted five wins and recorded three shutouts while helping the Eagles win the ASC championship. At Ozarks, he ranks fourth in career saves (261), third in shutouts (16), third in wins (29), third in goals against average (1.18) and third in minutes played (5938). He is a Biology major and a three-time member of the ASC Academic All-Conference team. During his career at Ozarks, he has been on the President's List and Dean's List. He plans to attend University of Arkansas for Medical Science and pursue a career as a surgeon.
Riki Haase | Political Science and Philosophy | Softball| Argyle, Texas
Riki Haase, a senior member of the softball team, posted an impressive offensive season for the Eagles as she led the team in batting (.384), doubles (8), triples (2), runs (13), slugging percentage (.589), hits (28) and total bases (43). She was a three-time member of the American Southwest Conference (ASC) All-Academic Team. Additionally, she was a member of the NFCA/Easton All-American Scholar-Athlete Team. At Ozarks, she owns the eighth highest batting average in a single season. She plans to pursue Law at Baylor University,
SUL ROSS STATE UNIVERSITY
Ashton Leech | Kinesiology | Baseball | Whitney, Texas
Ashton Leech is a three-year letterman of the Lobo Baseball team. He has maintained a high GPA throughout his college career (3.807). He is also a member of APTA, an active member of his church, and has engaged in numerous community service hours. After graduation, he will be attending the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, where he has already been accepted for their Physical Therapy program.
Annika Canaba | Kinesiology | Volleyball/Softball | Alpine, Texas
Annika Canaba has been involved in Sul Ross State athletics for three years and has also maintained a very high GPA throughout her undergraduate career (3.826). She has been an active member of her church and has also engaged in community service events throughout her time as a student. She will be attending graduate school after graduation at Sul Ross State University. In addition, Canaba has been involved on campus as a student ambassador, student worker, and member of the Newman Club and SAAC. She has done all of these things while participating and excelling in not one, but two, athletic programs at SRSU, volleyball and softball, where she has achieved a long list of recognitions at the conference level for all seasons of play. In volleyball, she also holds a national honor, as first in the nation with six triple-doubles.

Kelden Pruitt | Biomedical Engineering | Basketball | Heath, Texas
Playing in 98 games over his four-year career with the Comets, Kelden Pruitt closed his impressive career ranked second all-time at UT Dallas in blocked shots. A second team All-ASC pick as a junior and an honorable mention selection as a senior, Pruitt was a three-time Academic All-ASC honoree for the Comets. He made 67 starts during his four years with the program, averaging 8.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Boasting a grade point average of 3.97, Pruitt helped lead the Comets to the ASC title in 2019 and two trips to the NCAA Division III National Tournament during his career.
Keely Fillman | Business Administration | Soccer | Los Angeles, Calif.
The first All-American in program history, Keely Fillman wrapped up her career with the Comets by leading her squad to the ASC title game for the first time since 2013. A four-time first team All-ASC selection over her career, Fillman became the first women’s soccer All-American at UT Dallas as a sophomore when she collected third team honors from the United Soccer Coaches. A two-time all-region pick for the Comets, she was named the ASC’s Co-Midfielder of the Year as a senior. Fillman played in 60 games over her four years with UTD, making 58 starts, and closed her career with 24 goals and 18 assists for 66 points. She ranks ninth all-time at UTD in goals and 11th in points. A three-time Academic All-ASC selection for the Comets, Fillman was twice during her career.
