RICHARDSON, Texas – Seventeen student-athletes from seven different member universities headline the 2020-21 American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams, the league office announced on Monday.
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients include
A.J. Liu of UT Dallas in baseball,
Tristen Licon of Sul Ross State in men’s basketball,
Hannah Eggleston from Mary Hardin-Baylor in women’s basketball,
Mack Broussard from East Texas Baptist in men’s cross country,
Holly Dasher from UMHB in women’s cross country,
Steven Sellers of UMHB in football,
Hank Crain from ETBU in men’s golf,
Karen Alvarez of UTD in women’s golf,
Logan Valestin from Ozarks in men’s soccer,
Kristen Burdick of UMHB and
Raegan Kappler of ETBU in women’s soccer,
Hannah Garcia of ETBU in softball,
Robin Van der Heijden from Concordia Texas in men’s tennis,
Kathy Joseph from UTD in women’s tennis, Broussard and
Kelton Kemp of Belhaven in men’s track & field,
Bayli Luke of CTX in women’s track & field, and
Annika Canaba from SRSU in volleyball.
UT Dallas junior outfielder
A.J. Liu helped lead the Comets to their second-ever ASC championship this spring as the Comets made just their third trip to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Comets posted a 30-12 overall record this spring, claiming the ASC regular season title with a 19-7 league mark. UTD won the ASC’s regular season title and tournament title for the first time in program history. Liu was honored as first team All-ASC this spring before claiming second team all-region recognition by both the ABCA and D3baseball.com. He was named the ASC Hitter of the Week on May 3. Liu led the Comets with a .385 batting average this spring, ranking second in the ASC with 18 doubles. He added one triple and five home runs while leading the ASC in both hits (67) and runs scored (54). Liu ranked second in the ASC with 102 total bases and was third in the league with 41 RBI. He was named to the All-Tournament Team in the NCAA D-III Regional Tournament. Liu had a 3.96 GPA in Healthcare Management
Sul Ross State graduate guard
Tristen Licon was named to the Second Team of the D3hoops.com All-South Region Team. It was his second time being honored on the list after being named to the second team in 2020. Licon led the Lobos with 20.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. His 49.2 percent shooting percentage, 39.5 percent from three-point range, and 45 steals were also first on the team. The El Paso, Texas native finished his senior season as the No. 2 all-time scorer in program history with 1,579 points. He was named the ASC Defensive Player of the Year, All-Conference, West All-Division First Team and West All-Defensive Team in 2021. Licon is a two-time American Southwest Conference all-conference selection, four-time west all-division, and was last year's ASC West Division Player of the Year. He also has a 3.86 GPA while pursuing a Masters of Education.
Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore
Hannah Eggleston was the Most Valuable Player of the ASC Championship Tournament after leading the Cru women to their second consecutive conference championship. She averaged 9.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game to also earn All-West Division First Team honors. Eggleston was also CoSIDA Academic All-District VIII this year and ASC Academic All-Conference. She shot 45 percent from the field and was second on the team with 15 blocked shots. Eggleston has a 4.00 in Sport Management.
East Texas Baptist graduate
Mack Broussard earned the Distinguished Scholar Athlete of the Year in men’s cross country and men’s track & field for the second time. He is a four-time All-ASC selection in cross country, six-time ASC Runner of the Week an a three-time Academic All-Conference pick. Broussard was the individual medalist of the 2018 ASC Championship, earning All-Region in the same season. He finished third at the 2020-21 ASC Championship. In track, Broussard won the 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the ASC Championship during his career. He earned ASC Track Athlete of the Week three times and was the 2019 High Point Athlete and Outstanding Track Athlete of the Year. Broussard earned All-Region honors twice. Broussard has a 4.00 GPA in Business.
Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore
Holly Dasher dominated the ASC Championship, winning by nearly 23 seconds to become the Cru’s first ASC Individual Medalist. She also led the Cru to the first cross country team conference championship in program history. Dasher won all three of her meets this spring and was First Team All-Conference. She became the first UMHB runner to win a national honor when she was named USTFCCCA National Runner of the Week. Dasher is an ASC Academic All-Conference selection and will also be nominated for CoSIDA Academic All District honors. She has a 4.00 GPA in Education.
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior center
Steven Sellers earned the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second time after winning ASC Offensive Lineman of the Year honors for the second straight year and helping lead the Cru to an undefeated season and another ASC Championship. He is a three-time ASC First Team All-Conference selection and was D3football.com All-American. Sellers is an Associated Press All-American and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. He won CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the third straight year to move to another Academic All-America ballot and is also an NFF Hampshire Honor Society honoree. Sellers won the ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor and is also an ASC Football Distinguished Scholar-Athlete winner. He graduated with a 4.00 GPA as a double major and started every game for the 2018 NCAA Division III National Champions. UMHB football was 32-1 in Steven’s three years as a starter and won three consecutive ASC titles. He is a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection and was won the Dean’s Award from UMHB’s McLane College of Business this spring.
East Texas Baptist junior
Hank Crain was an All-ASC First Teamer this spring and honorable mention in 2019. Crain earned ASC Golfer of the Week twice and was ranked as the No. 1 golfer in Division III in the fall of 2020. He is a two-time Academic All-Conference selection and was inducted into the Sigma Beta Delta honor society for business. He has a 4.00 GPA in Business. Crain averaged 73.8 strokes per round and had one win with five top five finishes in 2020-21.
UT Dallas freshman
Karen Alvarez led the Comets to their first-ever ASC Championship this spring, propelling UTD to its first trip to the NCAA Division III Championship. She set the UTD single-season scoring average record at 78.43 over 14 rounds this spring. She placed in the top 10 in five of six tournaments for the Comets this spring, earning medalist honors at the Alamo Classic and Schreiner Spring Shootout. Alvarez was named first team All-ASC and named to the ASC All-Tournament Team after placing third at the ASC Championships with a 36-hole total of 154 (+10). Prior to the NCAA D-III Championship, Alvarez was honored as the Elite 90 Award winner for NCAA D-III women’s golf, becoming the first-ever Comet student-athlete to claim the award in any sport. A two-time ASC Golfer of the Week during the season, she led the Comets to a 15th place finish at the national championship this spring. Alvarez has a 4.00 GPA in Marketing.
Ozarks senior goalkeeper
Logan Valestin was named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-South Region Team, while earning ASC Goalkeeper of the Year and All-ASC First Team following the 2021 season. He was named the university’s winner of the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor. Valestin ranked fourth in the ASC in goals against average (0.94) while collecting 22 saves in 12 starts en route to leading the Eagles to the ASC Championship. Valestin posted five wins and recorded three shutouts. At Ozarks, he ranks fourth in career saves (261), third in shutouts (16), third in wins (29), third in goals against average (1.18) and third in minutes played (5938). During his career, he was ASC Player of the Week and a member of the ASC All-Tournament Team. A Biology major, he is a three-time member of the ASC All-Academic Team and was on the President's List and Dean's List. He plans to attend University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and pursue a career as a trauma surgeon and emergency medicine physician. He was a Magna Cum Laude graduate. Valestin had a 3.71 GPA in Biology.
UMHB junior
Kristen Burdick was voted ASC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and ASC First Team All-Conference this season. She scored three goals and finished with six points while also leading a defense that gave up just three goals on the season. Burdick was also named to the ASC All-Tournament Team as UMHB finished the season 7-1-1 and ranked a program-best 14th in the country in the final United Soccer Coaches Top 25 of the Year. She is a two-time ASC All-Conference selection and two-time ASC Academic All-Conference pick in her career. Burdick has a 3.75 GPA in Graphic Design.
ETBU graduate
Raegan Kappler earned the ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor, was a three-time Academic All-Conference selection and was an All-ASC Third Team pick three times. She was the 2020-21 East Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year and earned USC Player of Distinction Academic honors. Kappler finished her career with eight goals and 14 assists. She helped the Tigers to their first advancement in ASC Championship in 10 years in 2020-21 and make three tournaments. Kappler has a 4.00 in Business.
ETBU senior
Hannah Garcia was an NFCA All-American Second Team selection, NFCA All-West Region First Team, ASC Player of the Year and ASC All-Tournament Team. She made the ETBU President’s List three times and an academic award from the ETBU Social Science Department. Garcia helped the Tigers to ASC titles in 2019 and 2021 and was a three-time Academic All-ASC honoree, as well as making CoSIDA Academic All-District Team this season. She led the ASC in hits and RBI and had a 12-game hitting streak. Garcia has a 3.89 GPA in Criminal Justice.
Concordia Texas senior
Robin Van der Heijden helped the Tornados to their first ASC Championship title, defeating Hardin-Simmons in the final. Van der Heijden excelled on the court, finishing 5-7 on the year, but had a 3-1 mark in conference play, including a come-from-behind three-set win over the Cowboys' Desmond O'Shea back on April 2. For his performance on the court, he garnered ASC All-West First Team and All-Conference honors. In the classroom, Van der Heijden posted a 4.0 GPA while working on his MBA degree and was a 2021 ASC Academic All-Conference selection.
UTD senior
Kathy Joseph closed out her career as the most-decorated women’s tennis player in UTD history after advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA D-III Singles and Doubles Championships this spring. Joseph closed her career as a two-time All-American for the Comets, also collecting the recognition as a freshman. She was the ASC East Most Valuable Player after claiming All-ASC and first team All-ASC East honors as well as the ASC Athlete of the Year. Joseph led the Comets to a 12-4 overall record and a perfect 4-0 mark in ASC East play this spring. She is now a three-time All-ASC honoree and a four-time first team all-division selection for the Comets. Joseph was recognized as the ASC’s Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for women’s tennis as a junior in 2019. She was 15-3 in singles play this spring and 16-3 in doubles competition. A four-time Academic All-ASC honoree, Joseph holds the UTD career records for wins in singles (52) and doubles (52). She had a 3.87 GPA in Biomedical Engineering. This is her third Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor.
Belhaven senior
Kelton Kemp amassed quite a few accolades, setting school records in the 55 Hurdles (8.36). 60 Hurdles (8.53), 110 Hurdles (14.32), 400 indoor (50.33), 200 Outdoor (21.60), 400 Hurdles (53.92), 4x100 and 4x400. He was the ASC Athlete of the Week three consecutive weeks and was Belhaven’s first ever national qualifier, earning earn All-American honors in the 110 hurdles by placing seventh. Kemp had a 3.80 GPA in Public Relations.
Concordia senior
Bayli Luke finished her undergrad career with an impressive 4.0 cumulative GPA while earning a degree in Biology. For her academic prowess, she was an ASC Academic All-Conference selection in 2019 and 2021. Meanwhile, on the track, Luke has etched her name into the school's record books, finishing her career with the program record in the long jump, set in 2018, as well as the 400 meter dash, set in 2021. For her performances at the conference meets, which included a pair of runner-up finishes in the 400 meter in 2019 and 2021, she was an All-ASC selection. Luke qualified for the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 400 meter dash, where she placed 10th overall. She garnered her first-ever USTFCCCA South/Southeast All-Region honor in 2021. Meanwhile, for her success in the classroom and being a national qualifier, Luke was recognized as the 2021 Elite 90 winner for women’s track and field.
Sul Ross junior
Annika Canaba was named the West Division Most Valuable Player in volleyball. She recorded 3.23 kills, 3.58 assists and 2.50 digs per set while hitting .304 with 25 aces and 18 blocks. She also led the nation with five triple-doubles. Canaba led the team kills (193), was second in assists (215) and service aces (25), and third in digs (149) and blocks (18). Canaba earned All-Conference honors for the second time after being named to it in 2019 and is a three-time All-West Division selection. Canaba was a two-time ASC West Offensive Player of the Week this season. Canaba was the Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor recipient and Vice President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Canaba was also an All-ASC selection in softball. She had a 3.86 GPA in Sports Administration.
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams recognize student-athletes who achieve a high level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list – limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport – the sports information directors from the 12 ASC member institutions and three affiliate members select a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each sport.
