Treybig, Kahler Named Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Athletes of the Year

RICHARDSON, Texas – Acts of sportsmanship in competition, on campus and within the community earned Kaden Treybig of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Rachel Kahler of UT Dallas recognition as the 2020-21 American Southwest Conference Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Athletes of the Year, the ASC announced Wednesday.

The ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award honors each year a male and female student-athlete who best display attributes of sportsmanship, leadership, citizenship and academic integrity in his or her athletic, academic and life pursuits. The conference Directors of Athletics present the annual awards.

Treybig helped lead the UMHB men’s golf team to an ASC Championship and NCAA Division III National Championships berth this school year. He was the only upperclassman to play in the top five for the Cru at the conference tournament and was a leader throughout the season for the team. In addition to his leadership and work on the course, he is also an Academic All-Conference performer and a Cleveland/Srixon All-American Scholar.

“Since his initial recruitment into our program Kaden has striven to be a leader,” said UMHB head men’s golf coach Jordan Cox. “His willingness to listen combined with his desire to learn has accentuated his God-given abilities to be an example worthy of being followed. We are extremely appreciative for what he means to our team.

“Having Kaden recognized as the recipient of this award, knowing the quality of young men in our conference nominated, is a tremendous honor for our program and our university. The members of our conference can be assured that the characteristics to be recognized in this award named for Mr. Jacoby are properly reflected in Kaden’s selection. Both UMHB and the ASC can be proud.”
Kahler, a sophomore, was not able to compete during the regular season due to a multitude of reasons, including injury and even more severe complications that had led to hospitalization. Regardless, she drove on her own to be at every single meet this year with the Comets where she would not only support her team, but every other runner competing. Kahler made her only appearance for the Comets in the ASC Championships, placing 32nd in the meet with a time of 28:36.6. The Comets finished as runners-up at the championship.

“Rachel is such a caring and empathetic person that goes above and beyond to support all of her teammates and competitors,” said Danielle Kcholi, head cross country coach at UT Dallas. “She has a deep love for the sport and it shows in everything she does. “
