McMurry Wins 3rd Cross Country Title; UTD's Maclean Sets 8K ASC Championship Record

RESULTS

MARSHALL, Texas – McMurry won the 2022 American Southwest Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship at the Marshall City Arena on Saturday, October 29. This was the third championship in War Hawks' history and first since consecutive titles in 1999 and 2000.

UT Dallas junior Graeme Maclean was the individual medalist, winning the 8,000-meter race with a 25:34.6 (5:08.8/mi) which gave the Comets their first ASC individual champion. Maclean's time was an ASC Championship 8K Record, as he surpassed UT Tyler’s Ross Renfroe 25:42.30 time set in 2011.

McMurry scored 39 points and placed five runners in the top 12. UT Dallas came in second for a second consecutive year with 54 points and have been at least second place dating back to the 2015 campaign. LeTourneau (103) finished third.

McMurry sophomore Gabriel Sanchez was runner-up in the individual race with a 25:38.3 time, while Hardin-Simmons senior Zach Mitchell completed the top three with a 25:44.5 time. The duo have earned ASC All-Conference finishes each year they have competed with two and three, respectively.

LeTourneau freshman David Dugan was named Freshman of the Year and finished fifth with a time of 26:14.6.

Rounding out the top seven spots for All-Conference First Team honors were Concordia Texas sophomore Kamron Loera (4th, 25:59), UT Dallas senior Trent Sakakini (6th, 26:19.3), and McMurry junior Ethan Turner (7th, 26:23.1). This is the fifth ASC All-Conference award for Sakakini and Ozarks senior Nathan Rankin collected a fourth ASC All-Conference citation, placing ninth.

The Coaching Staff of the Year went to McMurry head coach Rexi Parcells and assistant Corey Koch. This was the first season since 2015 that both men’s and women’s cross country champions came from the same institution.

East Texas Baptist sophomore Daniel Zepeda was Newcomer of the Year. UT Dallas senior Justin Ardis was selected Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
