RICHARDSON, Texas –
UT Dallas won the 2022 American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship defeating
East Texas Baptist in straight sets 25-17, 25-22, 25-19 at the UTD Activities Center on Saturday to win its eighth title.
The Comets improved to 20-5 overall and won consecutive conference tournament titles for the third time ('08-'09, '15-'17, '21-'22). UTD has won six titles in the past eight years and made the championship round nine straight times. The Comets also improved to 33-18 in the ASC Tournament and hold the most wins by a conference team.
UT Dallas started the game hot, feeding off the home crowd from the opening serve. After dropping the first set, the Tigers competed hard looking to level the sets. There were nine ties and three lead changes in the second set. ETBU cut the score to 21-20, but three straight points pushed the Comets forward to grab the eventual 25-22 win and be on the brink of a title. The final set was contested back-and-forth and ETBU fought to a 17-16 edge, but a five-point streak shifted the tide and UTD closed on a 9-2 run.
Catherine Croft, won the tournament Most Valuable Player two years in a row. Her kill was the match point and capped a team-high 12. She also hit .360 and posted a game-high six block assists.
Gabi Engels and
Madison Ball contributed nine and seven kills, respectively.
Emma Sevening and
Izzy Sundquist combined for 30 assists. The Comets came up with seven blocks, with Croft,
Karle Lynd, and
Lauren Johnson had all of the team’s block assists with at least three.
East Texas Baptist
Avery Reid led all players in kills for the third straight tournament match with 14.
Graycee Mosley added nine kills and digs, while
Lexi Moody posted a game-high 27 assists.
The Tigers end their season with a 20-6 record.
This marks the second meeting between these programs in the conference championship and the Comets winning both. The other matchup was in 2008, which was UTD’s first-ever title.
UT Dallas receives the ASC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship. The NCAA Selection Show will air on Monday at 12:00 p.m. on NCAA.com
