2022 ASC Men’s Soccer Championship Central
Box Score
AUSTIN, Texas –
Mary Hardin-Baylor captured the 2022 American Southwest Conference Championship after a 6-0 victory over
LeTourneau on Saturday at St. Edwards to lead to its third title all-time. It was a 1-0 score through 70 minutes in the game, but the Cru would find the back of the net five more times to secure the win.
Mary Hardin-Baylor’s other two conference titles came back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018.
Nick Villanueva put UMHB in front in the sixth minute scoring off an assist from
Sawyer Young. The score remained there through halftime and most of the second half. LeTourneau was unable to keep its late-scoring magic alive as the sixth seed forced overtime in the previous two rounds to eventually advance on Penalty kicks. Instead it was the top-seeded Cru that exploded for five second half goals.
Patrick Roach, who was the tournament Most Valuable Player, had two goals of his own and three in the tournament. He delivered an assist to give him five points in the championship and nine in the tournament. Villanueva had bookend goals to give him two in the match.
Alex Bethke and
Karsen Macias also found the back of the net.
Dalton Lloyd had a 90-minute clean sheet with one save.
LeTourneau goalkeeper
Raul Torrez made 12 saves in 90 minutes.
The Cru improved their record to 13-2-2. They outscored their opponents 11-1 in the tournament. LeTourneau ends its season 7-7-6 and ended a five-game streak without a loss that propelled it to the final tournament spot and to its second championship appearance (1998 was other). This was the first time these programs met in the ASC Tournament.
Mary Hardin-Baylor receives the ASC’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. The NCAA Selection Show will air on Monday at 12:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
