Concordia Texas Nabs Top Spot in ASC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll

Tornadoes Duo Vazquez, Redding Named Preseason Players of the Year

RICHARDSON, Texas – Concordia Texas was voted as the favorite for the 2022 American Southwest Conference men's soccer title and a pair of Tornados standouts chosen preseason players of the year in a close vote by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
  
The reigning conference champions, Concordia Texas received 183 points with seven first place votes just edging Mary Hardin-Baylor who was second with 180 points and nine first place votes. Tornados senior forward Marco Vazquez and junior goalkeeper Joshua Redding were selected as the ASC Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively. This marked consecutive preseason honors for Vazquez.

In the preseason poll, UT Dallas listed third (149 points) with Hardin-Simmons (142) and Ozarks (120) checking in at fourth and fifth, respectively. HSU pulled two first place votes, while the Eagles garnered one.
 
Rounding out the poll is LeTourneau (90), East Texas Baptist (86), McMurry (71), Howard Payne (43) and Sul Ross State  (36/1 first-place vote). 
 
The ASC Offensive Player of the Year the last two seasons, Vazquez tallied 11 goals, including three game-winners, and four assists in the 2021 conference championship season. Redding was the ASC Goalkeeper of the Year last season after posting four shutouts, 55 saves, and a conference-high 0.90 goals against average.
 
Thirty student-athletes were named by the conference head coaches as Players to Watch in the upcoming season, including 19 who earned all-conference honors a year ago with nine first team honorees.
