ABILENE, Texas –
UT Dallas won the 2023 American Southwest Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday, taking its fourth title and first since 2020-21. The Comets had won three straight championships (2018 – 2020-21) in that run. This is the 28th ASC Men’s Cross Country Championship and was held at ACU Cross Country Course in Abilene, Texas, after weather in DFW made the original course unable to be used.
Concordia Texas junior
Kamron Loera claimed individual medalist, winning the 8,000-meter race with a time of 25:01.2 (5.02/mi). Loera broke the 8k ASC Championship record, which has been accomplished for consecutive years. He also became the first medalist from the Tornados in an ASC Men’s Cross Country Championship.
UT Dallas notched 36 points in its first-place finish and had five runners finish within the top 14.
McMurry came in second with 66 points and has been inside the top three each of the last three years.
Concordia Texas posted its highest finish as a team since 2014 (2nd place), as it scored 73 points to round off the top three team finishes.
UT Dallas senior
Graeme Maclean came in second with a time of 25:38.9. He was the 2022 Individual Medalist and had set the 8k championship mark (25:34.6). Rounding out the top three individual places was LeTourneau junior
Walker Reeves with a time of 26:04.1.
The top seven finishers were named ASC First Team All-Conference. Beyond Loera, Maclean, and Reeves are McMurry senior
Abram Maldonado (26:11.9), UT Dallas sophomore
Christopher Castro (26:16.3),
Thomas Hughes (26:22), and UT Dallas freshman
Frank Douglas (26:25.1).
Eight individuals earned all-conference honors multiple years, headlined by Hardin-Simmons senior
Zach Mitchell achieving the feat a fourth time.
