ETBU Tigers Scratch 9-4 win over Trinity; Reach NCAA Regional Championship

MARSHALL, Texas – East Texas Baptist baseball team defeated Trinity, 9-4, on Saturday (May 20) to move to 2-0 in the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Regional and move on to the championship round on Sunday (May 21). The Tigers get two shots at taking their first NCAA Regional Championship and play Trinity again. The Tigers edged Cal Lutheran, 11-2, in the elimination game that followed. The first pitch of Sunday's opening game will be 11 a.m. CT.
 
The Tigers (37-11), playing as the visitors, would fall behind 2-0 in the second inning. A duel between ETBU’s Sayers Collins and Trinity’s Cade McGahan carried through four innings. ETBU grabbed the lead and never trailed with a three-run fifth and sixth inning. The host Tigers led by as many as five (7-2), but Trinity reduced the deficit with a pair of runs in the eighth. ETBU got those runs back to cap the five-run win and extend its streak to seven games.
 
Nicolas Chavez led the team with three hits (2 runs, 1 RBI), and Ben Lea smashed a home run in the sixth inning as part of three extra base hits. ETBU totaled 15 hits with all nine batters recording one. Sayers Collins, ASC Pitcher of the Year, logged 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six. Full Recap
