Cru picked to Defend Title; Krenz and Fields selected Preseason Players of the Year

DALLAS – Mary Hardin-Baylor captured its first American Southwest Conference Women’s Soccer Championship a season ago and were selected to repeat again after voting conducted by the league’s coaches and sports information directors.

Concordia Texas senior forward Kallie Krenz was selected 2023 ASC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. She was the 2022 Offensive Player of the Year for the league after tying the league lead for goals with 10 and points with 22. She ranked second overall in total shots on goal with 28.

Mary Hardin-Baylor senior defender Maren Fields was voted 2023 ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Fields was All-ASC First Team last season and is a two-time all-conference recipient. The senior anchors a back row that allowed the fewest goals in the league last season with nine total through 19 total matches. This also included 1707:25 minutes total for the team and yielded a .47 goals-against average.

The Cru ran off a historic season in the program’s history by going 17-1-1 overall and 8-0-1 in conference play. They fell in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship. UMHB collected 153 points with 10 first place votes in this poll.

Hardin-Simmons came right behind at 148 points and six first place votes. The Cowgirls were runner-up a season ago in a 1-0 final, which ended a string of 19 straight championships. HSU went 12-3-2 overall and 7-1-1 in the conference.

Concordia Texas rounds out the top three with 113 points and are coming off a 9-6-3 overall record with a 6-3 league mark. UT Dallas claimed 106 points for fourth and went 7-7-2 overall with a 4-3-2 conference record. McMurry received 92 points and the final first place vote and went 8-6-4 overall with a 5-2-2 league record.

East Texas Baptist (75), Howard Payne (47), LeTourneau (39), and Ozarks (37) complete the remainder of the preseason rankings.

Sul Ross State will not count in the 2023 standings and are ineligible for both the ASC and NCAA Championships due to the Lobos reclassifying to NCAA Division II.

The 2023 season opens for most of these teams on Friday, September 1.
