2022-23 ASC Distinguished Scholar Athlete Teams

RICHARDSON, Texas – Eighteen student-athletes from seven different member universities highlight the 2022-23 American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams, the league office announced on Thursday.
 
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients are sorted by school below:

Alvarez, Moore, and Powell are two-time Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients having been tabbed with the award in 2021-22 for the respective sports.
 
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams recognize student-athletes who achieve a high level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list – limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport – the sports information directors from the 10 ASC member institutions and four affiliate members select a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each sport.
 
East Texas Baptist graduate student Jake Miller was a two-time All-ASC recipient and member of the 2023 ASC All-Tournament Team. Miller helped the Tigers baseball team capture the program's first ASC title, NCAA Division III Regional and Super Regional titles that eventually helped reach its first NCAA Division III World Series and finish third nationally after a record-setting 42-win season. The shortstop collected accolades like D3baseball.com All-Region Second Team, was part of D3baseball.com Team of the Week and NCBWA National Hitter of the Week honorable Mention. Miller was successful in the classroom with four-time ASC All-Academic, CSC Academic All-District, and graduated CumLaude in 2021. He earned a 4.00 GPA with his Master's in Business Administration in May, 2023. Last fall, Miller was involved in in the community with organizing youth baseball camps and handing out free Bibles after the camp.
 
Sul Ross State graduate student Julian Parades excelled in the classroom as he completed his degree with a 3.90 GPA in Kinesiology. Parades was named All-ASC Third Team, giving him two all-conference awards in his career. He ranked third in the league in made three-pointers with 46. Parades was named ASC Co-Player of the Week as he averaged 16.9 points and had a pair of double-doubles. Paredes finished with 1,032 career points and served as the SAAC chairman this past academic year.
 
Hardin-Simmons senior Samantha Tatum tarted every game for the Cowgirl basketball team that won the ASC regular-season title and went to the NCAA Tournament, helping the Cowgirls win their first NCAA game since 2006. She averaged 10 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Was also an academic all-district selection by CSC. Tatum graduated with a 4.00 GPA in Marketing.
 
Howard Payne senior Trynadee Greenwell  was a 2022-23 ASC Medal of Honor winner and had a productive career as a shooting guard and a defensive stalwart. As a senior she averaged nearly 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and one steal a game, highlighted by a 20-point effort against Ozarks. A 4.00 GPA student in Kinesiology, she was selected Academic All-Conference. She is also active in the social sorority, Chi Alpha Theta. She was a CSC All-Academic All-District honoree this year.
 
UT Dallas junior Graeme Maclean was a medalist at ASC Championship, breaking the school and conference meet 8k time in 25:34.6. He earned All-ASC First Team and was also All-ASC First Team in Track and Field. Maclean was on the 2020-21 ASC Men's Track & Field Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team and was ASC Runner of the Week in the fall. Maclean holds a 3.88 GPA with a major in Computer Science.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior Holly Dasher was named Second Team All-ASC and also earned ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year this season. She ran in six meets this season with one top-20 and two top-30 finishes. Dasher graduated in May with a degree in education and a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior Sante Parker, Jr. was a William V. Trophy Semifinalist, D3football.com Fourth Team All-America and Associated Press Division III First Team All-America this season. He was also named D3football.com Region 3 Defensive Player of the Year and First Team Region 3. Parker was also named ASC Defensive Player of the Year, ASC Defensive Lineman of the Year and First Team Defense. Academically, he was named CoSIDA Academic All-District and CoSIDA Academic First Team All-America. He helped the Cru to a 12-2 record, an ASC Championship and a NCAA Division III National Semifinalist finish.
 
East Texas Baptist sophomore Kip Childress was a first-place finisher at the 2023 American Southwest Conference Men's Golf Championship. Childress fell in the playoff hole, but helped the Tigers to a best finish as ASC Tournament runner-up. Childress shot a 68 on day one to help lead after the round. He is a two-time All-ASC winner and had three top 10 finishes with ETBU in the fall/spring and helped his team to a national ranking. Childress was ASC All-Academic, while being named to the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society and was on Dean's List. Childress holds a 3.93 GPA and is majoring in Business.
 
UT Dallas graduate student Karen Alvarez  is a three-time Elite 90 winner and fifth CSC Academic All-American from the league. Alvarez was CSC Academic All-District, ASC Co-Golfer of the Year, WGCA All-American Honorable Mention, and All-Region. Alvarez was an Individual Medalist at ASC Women's Golf Championship. She averaged a 76.28 with a low round of 69. Alvarez won three tournaments and four more top three finishes. Alvarez was ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor and is a two-time ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior Brody Conley was a Second Team All-ASC and CoSIDA Academic All-District selection. He also earned ASC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Conley earned a 3.86 as a double-major in psychology and criminal justice. He graduated magna cum laude and was a member of the Alpha Phi Sigma, Psi Chi and Gamma Beta Phi Honor Societies. Conley was also a teaching assistant. He started in all 17 games for the Cru, totaling two goals and two assists. He also helped the Cru limit opponents to just 25 goals and a 1.39 goals-against average as a member of UMHB's back line. The Cru also won the ASC Regular Season Championship, ASC Championship and hosted the NCAA First and Second Rounds.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor junior Maren Fields was a First Team All-ASC Selection and earned CoSIDA Academic All-District and Second Team Academic All-America honors. She started in 18 games for the Cru as a member of UMHB's back line. Fields totaled two assists with five total shots on the year. She helped the Cru limit opponents to just nine goals on the season. The Cru defense allowed only 50 shots on frame, totaling 12 shutouts on the year. The Cru also went 17-1-1 on the year, winning the ASC Regular Season Championship and the program's first-ever ASC Women's Soccer Championship. Fields played 1,327 minutes for the Cru and recorded a pair of 4.0s in the classroom.
 
East Texas Baptist senior Ashley Croft was named to the NFCA All-American Third Team this past spring. Croft got selected as the ASC Tournament Most Outstanding Player after helping the Tigers to an 11th ASC title. She is a two-time All-ASC and NFCA All-Region First Teams. Croft was ASC Pitcher of the Year and NFCA Pitcher of the Year Watchlist. She received ASC Pitcher and Hitter of the Week and led the ASC in wins this spring, which included a no-hitter. Croft is a 2023 CSC Academic All-American Third Team, three-time ASC Academic All-Conference, CSC All-Academic, and NFCA Scholar-Athlete. She held a 3.90 GPA with a degree in Rehabilitative Science. Croft was on President's List all three years at ETBU and was granted the 2023 ASC Medal of Honor. She is part of Pi Gamma Mu Honor Society for Social Sciences. Croft was a Bible study leader and FCA leader multiple years at ETBU. She was part of a softball team that earned NAD3AA community service award for the Pen Pal program and went on mission trip with ETBU softball to Australia this past year.
 
Hardin-Simmons senior James Moore has been named academic all-ASC in both years at HSU. Named all-ASC and all-West in singles and doubles in both seasons as a Cowboy. Named all-ASC Tournament in each season for the Cowboys, including the 2022 ASC Champion season for the Cowboys. Moore had a 3.80 GPA with a degree in Finance.
 
Concordia Texas graduate student Esteban Arredondo was an All-ASC winner that went 14-6 overall and 9-2 on line five. Arredondo was also appointed to the ASC All-Conference Doubles team where he and his partner, Joeri Bregman, posted a record of 11-2 on line two.  Arredondo boasts a 4.00 GPA with a Master of Education.
 
UT Dallas junior Rebecca Jackson was ASC East Division Most Valuable Player and was able to qualify for ASC All-Conference with the help of being an All-ASC East First Team selection. Jackson was CSC Academic All-District and ASC East Player of the Week. She helped the team to a conference championship and second-round appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Jackson was on the ASC All-Tournament Team. She posted a 13-4 record at No. 3 singles and tied for most doubles wins in UTD history with a 16-4 mark at No. 1. Jackson supports a 4.00 GPA and is a Neuroscience major.
 
East Texas Baptist junior Brandon Powell is a two-time NCAA National Qualifier in three events with the most recent this past spring in the 100m, 200m, and high jump. Powell is a two-time ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in track and field. He is the first student-athlete in ETBU history to qualify for nationals in three events in back-to-back years. Powell was named ASC Most Outstanding Track Athlete, All-ASC First Team, and is a five-time ASC Champion in 100m, 200m, high jump, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay. Powell was USTFCCCA All-Region for indoor (1 event) and outdoor (3 events) events. Had seventh best time in 100m nationally before final race. Powell was 2023 CSC Academic All-District, two-time ASC Academic All-Conference, multiple times on President's List, on Dean's List, Chi Alpha Sigma Award, and highest GPA of 4.00 on the track and field team the past two years. Helped with Operation Christmas Child and FCA on campus. He worked at a conference at the Ministry GFA World.
 
East Texas Baptist freshman Graycee Mosley was the ASC Champion in Discus this past year. Mosley finished All-ASC First Team in the event and would launch the 11th best throw in West Region at 128'10." Mosley helped ETBU to a third place finish in track and field at the ASC Championships. She was a multisport athlete with her success in volleyball. In her first season, Mosley was an All-American and All-ASC First Team. In the classroom, she was on the President's List for a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in Biochemistry. Mosley was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society. Mosley did spend 12 hours in Marshall ISD helping with fall festivals. Mosley also has gotten into the Marshall community with help at New Beginnings Church with Back to School Bash. Wrote letters to people in Honduras as part of Compassion International and the team they supported through ETBU. She also was part of Tim Tebow's Night to Shine in Marshall. She helped local businesses move locations. Finally, she helped Mission Marshall three different Grocery Night.

Concordia Texas senior Sarah Ghormley was an All-ASC First Team All-ASC. Ghormley was also an ASC Scholar-Athlete Medal of Honor Recipient. She finished the season second on the team with 313.5 points, 3.87  points per set, 271 kills, 3.35 kills per set 3.35 and attacking percentage. She also tied with teammate Dani Wysocki for the most aces on the season with 28, and she tied Kinsy Haschke for the most double-doubles this past season with 12. In the conference, she ranked fifth in kills and points. Ghormley posted a 3.93 GPA in Environmental Science and Conservation.
