MARSHALL, Texas – Mary Hardin-Baylor senior first baseman
Rhett Grosz and East Texas Baptist graduate student right-handed pitcher
Sayers Collins headline the 2024 American Southwest Conference Baseball Awards and All-Conference Teams announced Wednesday.
Grosz is a two-time ASC All-Conference recipient and led the Cru in many offensive categories. Grosz slashed .426/.665/.477/, while totaling 66 hits, 50 runs scored, and 14 doubles. Each of those marks ranked among the top 5 in the league, with batting average, hits, and runs ranking second. He was third in doubles. On the field, Grosz posted 224 putouts, 36 assists, and committed seven errors for a .974 fielding percentage.
Collins notched his third ASC Pitcher of the Year award overall and in as many straight years to continue adding onto his astonishing career. Collins paced the conference with a 0.84 ERA and a 0.74 Whip. He was 11-1 in 12 games started and had a pair of complete games and one shutout. He was second in the league with 75.1 innings pitched and 81 strikeouts, trailing his teammate Jagger Neely by one out and one batter punchout. Collins recently eclipsed 400 career strikeouts to rank third all-time in NCAA Division III and achieved the feat in 305 innings.
Hardin-Simmons third baseman
Jacob Hollingsworth was named Freshman of the Year. He led the Cowboys with a .370 batting average and had a .900 on-base percentage. Hollingsworth totaled 54 hits, nine doubles, one triple, two homers, 30 RBI, and 22 runs scored. He was 4-of-5 on stolen bases.
Concordia Texas sophomore outfielder
Colby Christian claimed Newcomer of the Year. He amassed 48 hits with nine doubles and home runs. Christian added three triples, batted in 37 runs, and scored 28 times. Christian was a key cog in the team’s 2024 ASC Championship run with a homer that was part of an 11-6 win over No. 1 Seed East Texas Baptist. Christian’s teammate
Efren Sanchez Jr. was voted Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. The catcher was named on the 2024 ASC Baseball All-Tournament Team.
East Texas Baptist won Coaching Staff of the Year for the fifth time. Guided by 10-year head coach
Jared Hood, the Tigers put together one of the top season performances nationally, ranking inside the top 10 in two polls for most of the campaign. ETBU ranked as high as No. 2 in D3baseball.com after finishing the regular season 34-6 and posted a 23-1 ASC record to claim the 2024 ASC Regular Season Championship. Also on Hood’s staff are: Tanner Matthews (Associate Head Coach), Connor Anderson (Assistant Coach) Andrew Loudermilk (Director of Operations), and Cody Johnson (Graduate Assistant Coach).
Thirty-four players were named to the ASC All-Conference team a previous time. This includes four-time selections
Dane Jones from LeTourneau and Collins from ETBU.
