ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' women's soccer team clinched its eighth straight American Southwest Conference outright regular season title with a 5-0 win over East Texas Baptist on Friday afternoon at HSU Soccer Complex. HSU will serve as host of the 2010 ASC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament, to be held Nov. 5-7.
The field and bracket for the ASC tournament will be announced Sunday (Oct. 31) on the conference's website, www.ASCsports.org.
The Tigers bunkered down the first half and had their entire defense in their own back third of the field. It limited the Cowgirls attack opportunities, but HSU still found the net twice. Carlyn Powers scored off a corner in the 14th minute and Erin Low scored in the 41st minute to make it 2-0 at halftime.
ETBU opened it up in the second half and the Cowgirls added three more goals. Katie Kuykendall scored from outside the top of the box, Devon Howard scored off a corner kick set play where Katie Kuykendall served it to Powers, who headed it down to Howard. Powers cleaned up a rebound in the 76th minute to make it 5-0.
HSU outshot ETBU 45-2 and 21-1 on goal. HSU had 16 corner kicks in the game. Rebecca Roth earned the shutout in goal for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls are now 16-0 on the year and 12-0 in ASC action. HSU continued its conference unbeaten streak to 131 games. Hardin-Simmons will look to complete an undefeated regular-season when it plays host to LeTourneau on Saturday.
