LUFKIN, TX -- Freshman Taylor O'Rear posted the top two individual rounds, paving the way for the Mary Hardin-Baylor women to capture their record-ninth title at the 2012 American Southwest Conference Golf Championships on Tuesday at Crown Colony Country Club.
Mary Hardin-Baylor put together rounds of 340 and 346 -- also top rounds in the event -- for a 686 total, good for a 31-stroke victory at the par-72 course. Darla Kirby, who has guided all of the Lady Cru's conference titles, was named ASC women's golf coach of the year.
UMHB advances to the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championships, to be held May 8-11 at Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Ind.
O'Rear carded an 80-81--161, topping teammate Sara Eckert (85-86) by 10 strokes. O'Rear and Eckert were joined on the all-conference first team by LeTourneau's Candice Nishimura (87-87) and Texas-Tyler's Danica Weddle (87-87) and Katie Crawford (83-92), who all tied for third individually with 174s.
Making up the second team all-conference was UMHB's Kristen Cain (91-86--177) and Kelly Gonyea (84-94--178), Concordia Texas' Blair Allen (90-88--178) and Schreiner teammates Gabby Rosales (86-92--178) and Sarah Stillwell (85-94--179).
Texas-Tyler put together rounds of 361-356 to be the team runner-up with a 717 total. Schreiner was third with a 352-377--729, followed by Concordia Texas (730), McMurry (798), Texas Lutheran (802), Hardin-Simmons (847) and Texas-Dallas (932).
Nishimura was named ASC Women's Golf Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year for the second straight season.
