Men’s Basketball All-Conference Teams Announced

and Sul Ross State senior
Alex Harrison
were named the East and West Division Players of the Year announced by the league office in conjunction with the release of the 2016 American Southwest Conference Men's Basketball All-Conference teams on Monday (Feb. 29), following a vote of the league's head coaches.
A three-time all-conference selection,
Gaines
received his second consecutive Player of the Year honor and is the first Wildcat named East Division Player of the Year since Ryan Vines (2000-01). Ranked second in the ASC in scoring (18.5), rebounds (9.2) and fifth in field goal percentage (.500), Gaines was also named to the all-defensive team and ranked third in the league in blocks (1.7) and tied for third in steals (2.0).
Harrison
anchored a Sul Ross State team that won the West Division title and is the first Lobo named West Division Player of the Year since Sidney Hooper (2005-06). Starting 22 games, Harrison scored 13.1 points per game and shot .481 from the floor. Harrison pulled down 127 rebounds, handed out 54 assists and had 29 steals and 11 blocks.
Gaines and Harrison, who were both selected to their respective all-division first team, were also named to the prestigious ASC All-Conference Team. They are joined by East Texas Baptist senior

In the East Division,
Caleb Loggins
of LeTourneau was named Freshman of the Year after leading all ASC freshman in blocks (26). LeTourneau junior

received Newcomer of the Year honors and led the ASC in assists (6.8) and minutes played (36.0). In addition to All-Conference honors,
Atkins
was named Defensive Player of the Year after recording 25 steals and 81 defensive rebounds. Ozarks junior
Josh Ferrell
received Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year honors and East Texas Baptist Coach
Bert West
was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. West led ETBU to a league-best 21 wins and a division title.
In the West Division, Sul Ross State received three individual awards. In addition to Harrison, teammates
Brock Anders
and sophomore
Caleb Thomasson
were named Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, respectively. Anders shot .531, scored 9.7 points per game and had 106 rebounds. Thomasson led SRSU in scoring (13.8) and rebounds (8.2), both ranked in the top 15 in the ASC.
Jones
received dual honors as an All-Conference selection and Defensive Player of the Year. Jones set the ASC record for blocks in a game (11), and season (114) and finished the regular season as the top shot blocker in Division III. Concordia Texas senior
Clay Marley
received Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year honors and Sul Ross State Coach
Clif Carroll
was named Coach of the Year after leading the Lobos to their first division title since 2005. SRSU was one of the most improved teams in the league moving from five to 10 conference wins and just five overall wins a year ago to 15 this season.
