Moore, Nishino Honored with Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award

RICHARDSON, Texas – Acts of sportsmanship in competition, on campus and within the community earned Justin Moore of LeTourneau and Suzuka Nishino of UT Dallas recognition as the 2021-22 American Southwest Conference Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Athletes of the Year, the ASC announced Friday.

The ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award honors each year a male and female student-athlete who best display attributes of sportsmanship, leadership, citizenship and academic integrity in his or her athletic, academic and life pursuits. The conference Directors of Athletics present the annual awards.

Moore, a senior men’s basketball player from Houston, Texas, was a two-time All-ASC East Division selection and the ASC East Division Freshman of the Year in 2017-18. After tearing just about everything in his knee last December, Moore rehabbed all summer to get back on the floor, working himself back into the rotation late in the 2021-22 season. He was the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Vice President and captain of the YellowJackets for three season.

“Justin is a true competitor and an incredible leader on and off the court,” YellowJacket head coach James Wallace said. “He is deserving of this award and I’m thankful that the entire American Southwest Conference recognized the impact that Justin had in his five years at LeTourneau. While we are sad that he will be leaving Longview, we are excited to watch the great things that are in his future. Justin left a legacy at LETU that reaches far beyond the court.”

Nishino, a junior women’s tennis player from Coppell, Texas, was a valued part of the 2022 ASC Championship team. She went 11-2 in singles and 10-3 in doubles, earning ITA All-America honors in the fall and spring. Nishino won the ITA Southwest Regional Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Singles Championship. Along with strong tennis ability, she would display strong character. Nishino routinely complimented opponents on good shots and points and often played balls that were considered out.  During the week leading up to a match she often commented on respect for her upcoming opponent as one of the reasons she worked hard in getting ready for a match.

“Suzuka has always been a very tough competitor, but her desire to win never eclipses her sense of fair play,” said UTD head tennis coach Bryan Whitt.
