RICHARDSON, Texas – Mary Hardin-Baylor senior guard
Josiah Johnson was selected Player of the Year to headline the 2023 American Southwest Conference Men’s Basketball All-Conference teams announced Tuesday (Feb. 28), following a vote of the league’s head coaches.
It is Johnson’s third straight season with the achievement, earning 2022 ASC Player of the Year and 2021 ASC West Division Player of the Year honors. Johnson paced the conference in the regular season with 21.7 points per game, 172 free throws, and 74 steals. He is the second all-time leading scorer in the ASC with 1,883 points across three seasons.
Joining Johnson on the All-ASC First Team are UT Dallas guard
Kyle Poerschke, Hardin-Simmons forward
Steven Quinn, East Texas Baptist forward
Darry Moore, and Mary Hardin-Baylor forward
Ty Prince. It is the third All-ASC First Team selection for Johnson while Quinn, Moore, and Prince are each two-time All-ASC First Team picks.
A first-time All-ASC pick, Poerschke was named Newcomer of the Year after leading UT Dallas with 18.8 points per game, 189 field goals, 51 three-point field goals, and 154 rebounds.
Concordia Texas guard
Jaylon Johnson was tabbed Freshman of the Year after leading the Tornados in several categories. Johnson was among the top five scorers in the ASC with 19.6 points per game shooting a league-best .418 three-point field goal percentage..
LeTourneau guard/forward
Warren Richardson earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and voted to the All-Defensive Team for a second year. Richardson led ASC rebounders (8.6 ave.) and was third in blocks with 1.5 per game.
UT Dallas forward
James Curtis was voted Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year and UTD head coach
Terry Butterfield was named Coach of the Year. It is the ninth Coach of the Year award for the 23-year coach who guided the Comets to a ninth 20-win season and second-place in the conference standings.
