Comets Win 2023 ASC Women's Golf Title; Alvarez Claims Medalist

GRANBURY, Texas – UT Dallas shot the lowest score of the round a third day in a row and captured the 2023 American Southwest Conference Women’s Golf Championship on a cold, rainy Sunday. The Comets earned their second ASC women’s golf title in three years after shooting a 312-299-303=914 at Nutcracker Golf Club.
 
With the win, UTD earns the ASC’s automatic qualifier berth to the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida beginning May 9.
 
UT Dallas Karen Alvarez earned the Individual medalist, the first from the Comets at the ASC championship. She protected her lead from day two finishing with an 81-70-73=224 (+8) overall to lead the field. Teammate Karen Lee came in second with a 226 and Mary Hardin-Baylor Sarah Kmiecik rounded out the top three with a 227. UT Dallas Sofia Trevino, Concordia Texas Emma Finger, and UC Santa Cruz Mikaela Paracuelles completed the All-Tournament honor list with their fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishes.
 
UC Santa Cruz finished second as a team shooting 314-303-318=935. Concordia Texas came in third with a 326-304-318-304.
 
Team and indivual selections for the Division III Women's Golf Championship will be announced Monday, May 1 at NCAA.com

Day Two Women's Golf Recap

Day two of the 2023 American Southwest Conference women’s golf championship was played on Saturday (Apr. 22) and saw an overall improvement of score totals. UT Dallas remains on top of the team leaderboard after shooting a 299 in the second round for an overall score of 611. The Comets are led by the top three individuals with Karen Alvarez shooting two under par in the round to grab the lead with a 151. Teammates Karen Lee and Sofia Trevino are a stroke behind.
 
UC Santa Cruz held firm in second place and has tallied a 617 over the 36 holes. Concordia Texas made a big jump to third place with a 630. LeTourneau and Mary Hardin-Baylor are tied fourth with a 640. Hardin-Simmons (669) and East Texas Baptist (700) complete the standings.
 
Other individuals to watch are UMHB Sarah Kmiecik with a 153 two-day score. Alyssa Yee from UCSC and Emma Finger from Concordia Texas carded a 75 in the round and are at 154. Mikaela Paracuelles from the Banana Slugs helps form a trio with 154 heading into the final 18 holes.
 
Round three will be Sunday (Apr. 23) with tee off slated for 9 a.m.
 

Day One Women's Golf Recap

Day one of the 2023 American Southwest Conference women’s golf championship was completed on Friday (Apr. 21) at Nutcracker Golf Club. UT Dallas held a slight edge in the team leaderboard with a score of 312 (+24). The Comets also had Sofia Trevino on top in the individual leaderboard after she shot a 74 (+2).
 
UC Santa Cruz followed in second place as a team with 314, while LeTourneau check in third with a 320. Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia Texas are fourth and fifth with a 322 and 326. Hardin-Simmons and East Texas Baptist round out the standings with a 333 and 353.
 
A quartet of players tied for second with a score of 77. This group included UMHB Sarah Kmiecik and Avery Hill, UTD junior Karen Lee, and UCSC Mikaela Paracuelles.
 
Day two begins with 18 holes on Saturday at 9 a.m.
