Comets open NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Trinity

NCAA Championship Tournament Bracket

DALLAS – UT Dallas was selected to play No. 10 Trinity in San Antonio Friday, March 1, at 7:35 p.m., announced by the NCAA Selection Show on Monday afternoon. The Comets (18-9) earned the automatic bid from the American Southwest Conference after Donovan Souter sank a championship-winning jumper inside the paint as time expired to edge Mary Hardin-Baylor, 78-77. It was the first game-winning shot at the buzzer in 26 ASC Men’s Basketball Championship games.

UT Dallas earned its fifth ASC title and is playing in its eighth NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament. The Comets return for the first time since 2020. Other appearances include 2005, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2019. The Comets have advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2014. They reached the Elite 8 in 2009.

The ASC is 37-36 in the NCAA Championship, which includes appearances from nine programs and eight actives in the league. UT Dallas’ eighth time in the national tournament matches Mary Hardin-Baylor for most among current members. UTD is 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the first round. The previous two years have seen an ASC team reach at least the Sectional Semifinals – UMHB reached the Sectional Finals in 2022 and Sectional Semifinals in 2023. The previous three national tournaments have had one team from the league reach the second round.

The winner of this game will advance to play the winner of Centenary and Nebraska Wesleyan on March 2 at 7:35 p.m.
