AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE TENNIS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Games: February 10 - February 16, 2026

MEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Erick Van Zyl, Jr., East Texas Baptist
Erick Van Zyl of East Texas Baptist went 4-2 in overall matches last week, helping the Tigers to a 2-1 record. In a 7-0 ETBU win over Texas Wesleyan, Van Zyl and partner Mark Armbruster defeated Alejo Zurmendi and William Bayliss 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 doubles. In the same match, Van Zyl also earned the win at No. 4 singles over Alejo Zurmendi 6-3, 2-6, 10-3.

Van Zyl continued this momentum against Covenant College, earning a win in No. 4 singles over Graham Hayes 6-3, 6-4, helping ETBU secure the 4-3 team victory. In the Tigers' lone loss on the week, Van Zyl and Armbruster defeated Max Verellen and Lucas Wrigley of #22 Swanee 7-6 (7-4) in No. 2 doubles.

WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Breanna Taylor, Fr., Mary Hardin-Baylor
Mary Hardin-Baylor freshman Breanna Taylor helped clinch the Cru’s 4-3 win over Southwestern on Thursday, earning wins in both the No. 2 doubles and No. 5 singles. In doubles, Taylor and partner Emma Nordin defeated Addison Powell and Kimbery Duncan 6-4. Taylor then went on to defeat Katia Childs 6-7, 7-5, 7-0, to secure the UMHB win over Southwestern.

The Cru will take on Concordia University Texas on Saturday, February 21.

OTHER OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES

Hardin-Simmons freshman Phoenix Davis had two wins for the Cowboys at Howard Payne on Saturday. Davis along with doubles partner Gavin Hail earned the 6-1 win over Parker Hoel and Ben Mabry. He then went on to defeat Gabriel Keeney in the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-4.

Sydney Tomlin of Hardin-Simmons won all three of her matches on the weekend in two games against Howard Payne. Starting off the weekend, she won the second flight of singles 6-2, 6-2 against Victoria Ramos. Following this she won the first flight singles in game two against Hannah Lightener on a retirement. Tomlin and partner Brenna Gordon won No. 1 doubles 6-4 in game two, helping Hardin-Simmons to a 6-1 victory in the match.
