RICHARDSON, Texas –– McMurry University’s Hann Ollison and Hardin-Simmons University’s Ashley Huston – both senior track and field student-athlete standouts – have been selected as the 2008-09 American Southwest Conference Athletes of the Year, the league office announced on Tuesday (June 16) after a vote of the conference’s sports information directors and ASC Outstanding Media Service Award members.

The American Southwest Conference Athlete of the Year award, in its tenth year, recognizes the male and female student-athlete whose athletic accomplishments best contributed to their sport, their institution’s overall athletic program and to the conference. Each ASC member institution nominates its campus Athlete of the Year award recipients to the conference-wide ballot.

Ollison becomes McMurry’s third male winner of the ASC Athlete of the Year award, joining fellow tracksters Cody Brotherton (2004-05) and Brad Parris (1999-00). McMurry has had six all-time winners, as golfer Brittany Cary (2003-04), trackster Talitha Belcher (2000-01) and basketball player Ogonna Merritt (1999-00) took female honors. McMurry trails only the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (seven) for most all-time ASC Athletes of the Year. Huston becomes Hardin-Simmons’ third all-time winner of the ASC’s top award, joining basketball player Kendra Anderson, who won back-to-back awards in 2001-02 and 2002-03. HSU’s three female winners ties it for the most in league history with McMurry.

Ollison (Colorado City, TX / CCHS), a multidisciplinary studies major, recently completed his illustrious career as one of the most decorated track & field athletes in NCAA Division III history as he finished his college career a six-time national champion and 17-time all-American.  Last May, Ollison helped lead the McMurry men's outdoor track & field team to a second-place finish as he won the national title in the 400-meter dash and finished second in the 200-meter dash. In the 2009 indoor season, Ollison helped McMurry to a fourth-place team finish as he won the national title in the 400-meter dash and earned all-American honors as part of the McMurry 4x400-meter relay team. For his senior-year performance, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association honored Ollison as the South/Southeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year.

Ollison might be best remembered for his performance at the 2008 Outdoor National Championship where he helped contribute to 34 of McMurry's 35 team points en route to leading McMurry to its first-ever team National Championship. Ollison finished out his McMurry career as a two-time national champion in the outdoor 400-meter dash, a two-time national champion in the indoor 400-meter dash, and a two-time member of the national champion McMurry outdoor 4x100-meter relay team. Ollison is also a three-time ASC Male Outstanding Track Athlete of the Year award winner and helped lead McMurry to four ASC titles during his collegiate career.

Huston (Buffalo Gap, TX / Jim Ned HS), an education major, had a banner year for the Hardin-Simmons track program, which was in its inaugural season. Huston won the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon and high jump NCAA Championships. Huston was also an All-American in the indoor high jump and the outdoor long jump. She also won five events at the ASC Championships and was named the national field athlete of the year by the National Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Huston also was named an academic all-district selection by CoSIDA and was an academic all-ASC selection. She was also the American Southwest Conference Field Athlete of the Year.

Huston was recently named the Honda Award winner as the top female athlete in Division III, making her the first ASC athlete to be so honored. All of this came on the heels of her tearing her anterior cruciate ligament at the end of basketball season in the 2007-08 school year. Huston has already graduated from Hardin-Simmons and is working as a coach at Cisco High School. She graduated with a 3.74 grade point average.

In the ASC Athlete of the Year men’s voting, Mary Hardin-Baylor senior football player Eric Henri (Lake Dallas, TX / LDHS) finished second and Hardin-Simmons junior football player Justin Feaster (Glen Rose, TX / GHHS) was third. Henri, an All-American, was named ASC Defensive Player of the Year and guided an ASC title, while Feaster was the ASC Offensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy. Both led their teams to the NCAA playoffs. On the women’s side, University of Texas at Tyler senior softball player Megan “Roo” Richardson (Platteville, CO / Metro State) was second in the balloting, followed by University of the Ozarks senior multi-sport standout Olivia Fisher (Mountain Home, AR / MHHS). Richardson, an All-American and the ASC East Division Player of the Year, guided the Patriots to their first ASC title and appearance in the NCAA Division III Softball World Series. Fisher was an all-conference performer in soccer, basketball and tennis.
