TYLER, TX -- Freshman Cheyne Kendall shot 70-71 and won medalist honors in his first collegiate tournament while leading Schreiner to a third place finish at the Al Jones Memorial hosted by UT Tyler.
With this result, Schreiner moves into the national rankings at #23 for only the second time in program history. Schreiner shot 299-305 over the 6,944 yard, par 71 course at The Cascades. Host and #1-ranked UT-Tyler won the event followed by 8th-ranked Emory which edged SU by three shots over 36 holes.
In the first round, Kendall's 70 was joined with junior Andy Bell's 75. Sophomore Marcus Vargas shot 76, followed by a 78 by freshman Tommy Xu and 82 by junior Kelby Ruiz. UTT shot 288 to lead after 18 holes. Schreiner was in second followed by 17th-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor. Emory was in fourth. Kendall was in third place individually, two shots behind the co-leaders.
In the second round, Kendall got off to a slow start, shooting 38 on the front side. He came back with 33 on the back nine and rallied to the victory. Ruiz was SU's second lowest scorer, shooting 76, followed by Vargas at 78, Bell at 80 and Xu at 82.
Mary Hardin-Baylor finished fourth - five shots behind Schreiner - followed by #7 ranked Trinity at 616. 32nd-ranked LeTourneau was in sixth, followed by Concordia-Texas(624), Mississippi College (628), Centenary (633), Louisiana College (639), Texas-Dallas (640) and Hendrix (675).
Coach Macosko on the result: "To finish third out of 12 teams is a strong start to the season. We did this last year (played well and earned a national ranking) and then got caught up in ourselves and then took the rest of the year to get back to that level. We have a different team this year and I hope we won't make that mistake again. Cheyne's scores were impressive but in our minds, the scoring is irrelevant. From day 1, Cheyne has come in with an uncommon maturity. He's clearly been our top freshman regardless of his score. It's how he plays the game that is so impressive. You know you're going to get his best and he always puts team first. It's not surprising that our returners and Cheyne are our top players right now. It's only a start and everybody on the team needs to keep improving."
The team returns to action on October 17 and 18 for the fourth annual Schreiner Fall Classic at Scott Schreiner Golf Course.
