Watch UMHB accept the championship trophy
HORSESHOE BAY, TX – The Mary Hardin-Baylor women got all-conference performances by Rachel Van Hoozer, Allison Holly, Kelly Gonyea and Allison Williams to claim its record eighth American Southwest Conference women’s golf title on Tuesday on Apple Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay Resort.
Schreiner sophomore Gabby Rosales won the individual title after firing an 11-over-par 77-78—155 on the 5,906-yard layout, holding off two-time defending conference champion Leslie Lee of LeTourneau (80-77—157) by two strokes.
UMHB, which played four freshmen, put together rounds of 329 and 324 for a 653 total to better hard-charging runner-up McMurry (337-321) by five strokes. VanHoozer (80-80—160) and Holly (82-79—161) finished tied for third and fifth, respectively, to earn first-team all-conference
honors. Gonyea (82-84—166) tied for seventh, while senior Williams (86-81—167) tied for tenth to take second-team all-conference honors. Sara Eckert (85-84—169) also chipped in for the Lady Cru by tying for 14th.
“I told them to trust their swing, bottom line,” said UMHB’s Darla Kirby, who was named ASC Coach of the Year. “We had four freshmen and there were some nerves yesterday and a little bit today, but we got through it. These are competitive kids.”
UMHB now advances to the 2011 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championships, to be held May 10-13 at Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
McMurry, which was paced by first-team all-conference golfer Monica Harris (83-77—160) and second-teamers Katie McElroy (84-79—163) and Courtney Norton (83-84—167), posted the tournament’s low round of 321 on Tuesday to make a run for the crown.
Schreiner (668) finished in third place, followed by Texas-Tyler (670), LeTourneau (676), Concordia Texas (759), Texas Lutheran (956) and Texas-Dallas (1,076).
Schreiner also got a second-team performance from Sarah Stillwell (82-84—166), while Texas-Tyler got the same from Katie Harris (85-81—166).
LeTourneau sophomore Candice Nishimura was named ASC Women’s Golf Sportsmanship of the Year.
