League Schedule
RICHARDSON, Texas –– The
Mary Hardin-Baylor and
Texas-Dallas men’s basketball teams have been predicted to repeat their American Southwest Conference West and East Division titles, respectively, after a vote of each division’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members, the conference office announced on Wednesday (Oct. 24). Schreiner’s
Travis Pflughaupt and Texas-Dallas’
Kyle Schleigh earned 2012-13 preseason player of the year honors.
Two-time conference champion Mary Hardin-Baylor (25-3, 20-1 ASC) totaled 140 points and earned 17 of the possible 21 first-place votes to be the West Division favorites in the annual poll. Head coach Ken DeWeese’s Cru put together winning streaks of 16 and nine games last season, won the division crown for the fourth time in six years and appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament – with an at-large bid – for a third consecutive season . UMHB led the league with a +12.6 scoring margin, allowing a division-low 66 points per game.
Hardin-Simmons (21-7, 16-5 ASC) was predicted for a second-place finish in the West by totaling 122 points and garnered three first-place votes. HSU is coming off a season in which it reached the ASC title game and set a program record for wins in a season. Concordia Texas (13-11, 11-10 ASC) was the selection for third place with 102 points and collected the final first-place vote. Schreiner (13-13, 11-10 ASC) totaled 81 points to round out what would be the division’s four teams to qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament. Texas Lutheran (63 pts.) was picked fifth in the West, followed by Howard Payne (43 pts.) and Sul Ross State (37 pts.).
Two-time ASC champion
Texas-Dallas (22-5, 16-4 ASC) totaled 147 points and picked up all of the possible 21 first-place votes to be the unanimous favorite to win the East Division. Head coach Terry Butterfield’s Comets closed out the regular season with a 12-game winning streak last year to win their fourth straight division title. UTD, which has advanced to the NCAA tournament three times over the last four seasons, had the league’s top-rated defense last year by allowing only 63 points per game.
East Texas Baptist (14-12, 11-9 ASC) was picked to finish second in the East, totaling 114 points. ETBU has won at least 14 games in each of the last four seasons. Six-time conference champion Mississippi (9-16, 7-13 ASC) garnered 109 points to land in the third place spot. Texas-Tyler (8-17, 7-13 ASC) totaled 78 points to round out what would be the division’s four ASC tournament teams. Louisiana College (718 pts.) was predicted to finish fifth in the East, followed by Ozarks (52 pts.) and LeTourneau (31 pts.).
Pflughaupt (
El Campo, Texas / ECHS), a 6-7, 205-pound center, was named ASC West Division Preseason Player of the Year. He averaged a double double of 17.2 points and a league-high 10.2 rebounds to help Schreiner qualify for the ASC tournament for the first time in program history. Pflughaupt also totaled 45 steals and 23 blocked shots.
Schleigh (
Houston, Texas / Kingwood HS), a 6-6, 195-pound forward, was named ASC East Division Preseason Player of the Year. He averaged 15.9 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots to help fuel Texas-Dallas to a division title. Schleigh also led the conference in 3-point shooting at 44.5 percent (49-for-110).
Pflughaupt and Schleigh were both members of their respective division’s first-team in 2011-12. Pflughaupt was named the West’s newcomer of the year, while Schleigh was selected to the prestigious five-player ASC All-Conference Team.
The 2012-13 season – the 17th in league history – begins as early as November 15. The three-day, eight-team, single-elimination conference tournament is slated for February 22-24 at the site of the East Division’s top seed and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship will be on the line.
NOTES: The only new head coach in the conference is Schreiner’s
Jimmy Smith, who was a student-athlete and assistant coach at fellow ASC member Mary Hardin-Baylor. . . . Former league member McMurry won the conference championship and finished 20-9 overall and 13-8 in the West Division last season, while fellow ex-ASC institution Centenary went 11-11 overall but did not have an East Division record due to going through the NCAA Division III reclassifying process . . . . Mary Hardin-Baylor is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25 Poll. . . . To talk about ASC Basketball on Twitter this season, use the hashtag:
