Lewis, Welch, Holland, Ryan take Track weekly honors

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Detaveon Lewis, Gr., East Texas Baptist
East Texas Baptist graduate student Detaveon Lewis (McKinney, Texas) finished seventh out of 41 runners in the highly competitive 60-meter dash with NCAA D1, D2, and JUCO runners along with unattached at the Boston U. Last Chance. He had the fastest NCAA Division III time in the event and was third in his heat before the finals, where he matched his fastest time on the season. In the 200-meter dash he was second in his heat and finished 33rd out of 60 runners.
 
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Sutton Welch, Sr., McMurry
McMurry senior Sutton Welch (Abilene, Texas) took home an event championship in the first outdoor meet of the season in the hammer throw at Hardin-Simmons Invitational. Welch landed a throw 171 feet, 1 inch, which captured first by nearly eight feet. This is the second Field Athlete of the Week in a row and this season for Welch.
 
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kylah Holland, So., Hardin-Simmons
Hardin-Simmons sophomore Kylah Holland (Clyde, Texas) broke a program record with a time of 4:50.03 in the 1500 meters. Holland also ran in the 800 meters and finished with a result of 2:25. Holland won both events in her outdoor track debut. This is Holland's second Athlete of the Week award this season.
 
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Elizabeth Ryan, Fr., McMurry
McMurry senior Elizabeth Ryan (Early, Texas) made a big impression for assistant coach Cody Brotherton's throwing group in the first outdoor meet of 2023. She won the hammer by over seven and a half feet and placing second to an NCAA Division I athlete in the discus by less than three and a half feet.
 
OTHER TOP MEN’S PERFORMANCES
UT Dallas junior Graeme Maclean (Fairview, Texas) won the 5,000 meters at the HSU Invitational, besting his teammate in second place by more than 35 seconds with a time of 15:15.04. He broke the school record in the event by 2.45 seconds.
 
Hardin-Simmons junior Nathaniel Finch (Fairview, Texas) earned a pair of top two finishes in throwing events at its home outdoor event. Finch won the discus with a throw of 144 feet, six inches (44.05m). Finch added a second-place result in the shot put with 45 feet, 9.75 inches (13.96m).
 
Concordia Texas senior Alejandro Salazar (Galveston, Texas) won the javelin, which was his lone event at the HSU Invitational. Salazar tallied 10 points for his team by placing first in the javelin with a throw of 173 feet, 3 inches (52.81m)
 
OTHER TOP WOMEN’S PERFORMANCES
Concordia Texas junior Pendo Mugofwa (Cedar Park, Texas) posted team-best times of 12.42 in the 100-meter dash and 28.09 in the 200-meter dash in her collegiate debut at the HSU Invitational.

Hardin-Simmons junior Alexa Sowers (Carlsbad, New Mexico) took first place in the long jump at the HSU Invitational. Sowers posted a mark of 15 feet, 6.75 inches (4.74m).
