ASC Women's Tennis Preseason Highlights Comets and Cru as Favorites for Divisions

DALLAS – In a vote by American Southwest Conference women’s tennis head coaches, UT Dallas and Mary Hardin-Baylor were selected to win its respective divisions, the league office announced Wednesday.
 
UT Dallas swept the polls with the top vote from all nine coaches and claimed 45 points to lead the East Division. The Comets are unbeaten in five seasons of being in the East Division since 2018 and went on to win their fifth ASC Women’s Tennis Championship overall a season ago. It is their fourth straight title and third in as many season.
 
East Texas Baptist came in second with 35 points and are coming off a winning record that saw its only divisional loss to UTD. LeTourneau was selected third with 27 points and had the third seed out of the division last year. Howard Payne and Ozarks each registered 14 points.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor claimed five first-place votes to catapult to the top of the West Division with 30 points. The Cru finished third in the West Division last season, but did reach the semifinals and return many players from last year’s team.
 
Concordia Texas followed closely with 28 points and claimed three first-place votes. The Tornados had a 3-1 record in the division last season and were a No. 2 seed, only falling to the eventual champions in the semifinals. Hardin-Simmons came in third with 22 points and one first-place vote. The Cowgirls earned the Division title last season behind a perfect record and would reach the championship match and oppose UTD. McMurry completed the rankings with 10 points.
 
Sul Ross State will not count in the 2024 standings and are ineligible for both the ASC and NCAA Championships due to reclassifying to NCAA Division II.
 
In addition to the preseason poll, 20 players were named to the ASC Women’s Tennis Preseason Watch List by the head coaches. Four players were an All-Division selection in 2023. Headlining the quartet were East Division Freshman of the Year Victoria Ramos from Howard Payne and West Division Freshman of the Year Isabella Cepeda from Concordia Texas. Cepeda and Lauren Coleman from Hardin-Simmons were All-Conference selections. Sul Ross State’s Reagan Ramsey is featured and was West Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor kicked off the spring season with a match at Texas Lutheran this past Saturday. Most teams will be starting action in the coming week.
 
2023-24 ASC Women’s Tennis Schedule
 
The 2024 ASC Women’s Tennis Championship will be held April 25-27 at the site hosted by the No. 1 Seed in the East Division. The top three seeds from each division qualify for the tournament with a single elimination format.
