Record Day for Comets to claim 2024 ASC Women's Golf Title; Trevino Medalist

2024 ASC Championship Central

BROWNWOOD, Texas – A day of records were set at the 2024 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, as UT Dallas headlined the 54-hole tournament event with a historic team effort led by a phenomenal individual effort from Sofia Trevino on Tuesday at The Hideout Golf Course. The Comets captured their third ASC Women’s Golf title in the past four years and went back-to-back under Head Coach Cole Sondgeroth, who was named ASC Coach of the Year a second straight year.

No. 13 UT Dallas held off a round three run by Mary Hardin-Baylor and carded a 296-297-301=894 for the lowest 54-hole team score at an ASC Women’s Golf Championship. It tops UTD’s tournament best for three rounds in 2023, when it scored 914. The Comets claim an automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship Tournament, which will be announced May 6.

Trevino was in control this conference championship, as she carded a -3 par (69) and never finished in a different position, as she scored even each of the following rounds. She was the only individual to shoot under par overall and broke the three-round championship record by six strokes. The junior won individual medalist and gives the Comets their two all-time medalists in back-to-back championship campaigns.

Mary Hardin-Baylor followed in second with an 897, as the Cru produced the lowest third round score of the day with a 297. That reduced the seven-stroke deficit to three, but UTD was able to hold on with Trevino sealing the victory on the final hole with her incredible effort.

LeTourneau and Hardin-Simmons finished tied for third with 954, as the Cowgirls finished one stroke ahead on the round to draw even. Concordia Texas (969), UC Santa Cruz (996), East Texas Baptist (1083), and McMurry (1137) rounded out the team standings. Howard Payne also had a pair of individuals competing.

Trevino headlined the All-Tournament Team with a 213. Mary Hardin-Baylor Sarah Kmiecik was second with a 76-73-73=222 and her teammate Avery Hill was third with a 74-77-74=225. UTD’s Karen Lee scored a 73-77-76=226 for fourth, while Hardin-Simmons’ Shay West was fifth with a 72-79-76=227. Wrapping up the All-Tournament Team was a pair of golfers from Concordia Texas Samantha Miethke and Sophia Padilla, who each had a 228. Miethke scored the lowest round score with a 71.

Trevino sat atop the leaderboard in the tournament for Par 4s (3.97 avg. -1) and Par 5s (4.67 avg. -4). She also led the group in birdies with 12. Her teammate Maddy Vilven also reached double-digits (10). UMHB’s Izzy Crow led all players with 38 pars. There was one Eagle from LeTourneau freshman Elena Jurado who had a hole in one on the 5th hole to provide an amazing highlight to what was an amazing final round and overall memorable championship.
