ALPINE, Texas -- Sul Ross State head women’s basketball coach David Tandy announced his resignation following Saturday’s season finale against Concordia.
Tandy will continue to teach classes in the physical education department until June. He is currently pursuing teaching and coaching opportunities at the high school level.
Tandy wraps up his 13th year as the head women's basketball coach. Tandy has seen twenty-nine other women's coaches pass through the tough ASC. His time as a coach and lecturer at Sul Ross give him the second longest tenure in the conference at this time among the women's basketball coaches.
Tandy played four years of basketball at Sul Ross State for longtime coach and now Professor of Kinesiology, Dr. Chet Sample, who is a Sul Ross and A.S.C. Athletic Hall of Honor member.
Over the past eleven years Tandy's squads have been up and down in the conference standings, with a season best third place conference finish during the 2003-2004 season. In his eleven seasons Coach Tandy has recruited one Conference M.V.P. (April Ramirez, Corpus Christi 03-04) one West Division Defensive Player of the Year (Danielle Furr, Reagan County 05-06) and two West Division Freshman of the Year Players. (April Ramirez 00-01 and Shannon Hall, Snyder 99-00)
Forty of Tandy's student-athletes have been named to the American Southwest Conference Academic All-Conference Team and twenty three of his former players are now coaching or teaching in public schools across Texas. Eleven members of this year’s squad have ties to Sul Ross, either by a family member or coach who has attended Sul Ross.
Tandy began his coaching career at Alpine High School with stops at Bronte, Lampasas, and Meadow. During those thirteen years in the public schools, Tandy won more than 70% of his games which included seven district and bi-district titles, had nine seasons with more than twenty wins and five regional tournament appearances. Tandy also coached cross country, football and girls track. He took 13 athletes to the State Track meet and in 1989 his Bronte girls finished as the State Runner-up team.
Coach Tandy graduated from Klein High School and received his Bachelor's of Science (1983) and Master's of Education (1984) from Sul Ross State.
