Hardin-Simmons flanker Kirk Rogers wrapped up an outstanding four-year career for the Cowboys this fall by finishing as one of the top receivers in school and American Southwest Conference history. In recognition of his achievements, Rogers has been selected to play in the American Football Coaches Association sponsored Aztec Bowl, an annual all-star game that matches a team of top seniors from the NCAA Division III ranks against Mexico's top collegiate players.
This year's Aztec Bowl will be played on December 15 at Parque Madero in the city of Saltillo. Kickoff is scheduled for noon CST.
The ASC has sent several players to the Aztec Bowl over the years, with Austin College running back Aaron Kernek, Howard Payne defensive back Tanner Etheredge and Mississippi College punter Wilson Hillman making the trip last season.
Rogers concluded his career as a three-time all conference performer, earning first-team All ASC recognition as a junior and senior. He finished with 199 career receptions, establishing three conference career records in the process. Rogers is the all-time ASC leader in career receiving yards (4,117), touchdown receptions (50) and yards per catch (20.7).
HSU head coach Jimmie Keeling says there is no player more deserving than Rogers to participate in Division III's top all-star game.
"Kirk has excelled in his four seasons with us." Keeling said. "Everytime we needed a big play he was there to bail us out."
Rogers says that even though he is disappointed that HSU's season ended in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs, he is excited about another chance to play football. "We didn't finish the season like we would have liked as a team," Rogers said.
"However, it is a big honor for me to play in the Aztec Bowl. I look forward to playing with the best players in the country."
This is the fifth consecutive year that the AFCA has sent a team of Division III all-stars south of the border to play a game that traditionally ends Mexico's college football season. For the first time in the history of the event, the game will be broadcast live over the Internet. Three one-hour game previews will also be broadcast the three days prior to kickoff.
