RICHARDSON, Texas—University of Mary Hardin-Baylor quarterback Cody Fredenburg (Belton, Texas) and free safety Tony Salazar (Dripping Springs, Texas), the American Southwest Conference football players of the year, headline the list of 2003 ASC all-conference football selections announced today (Nov. 19) following a vote of the 10 league head coaches.

The two seniors are among the 23 first team all-conference award winners from ASC tri-champions UMHB, East Texas Baptist University and Hardin-Simmons University. All 10 conference teams had players named to one of three honor teams.

Fredenburg, a first team pick at quarterback, compiled 2,060 yards of total offense with 18 touchdowns, throwing for 1,535 yards and running for 525 yards. A first team defensive back, Salazar finished the season with 63 tackles (34-29), helping UMHB to lead the conference in rush defense (62.7 ave.).

Three players shared Offensive Lineman of the Year honors—offensive guard Adam Hernandez (Victoria, Texas) of Hardin-Simmons University; offensive tackle Matt Miller (Lafayette, La.) of Louisiana College, and left tackle Jeff Oliver (China Springs, Texas) of UMHB. Defensive end Keith Zunker (San Antonio, Texas) of Mary Hardin-Baylor was selected Defensive Lineman of the Year. All four were ASC first team picks.

Howard Payne University running back/returns specialist A.J. Edwards (Glenn Heights, Texas) was voted ASC Freshman of the Year after leading the conference in kick return average (26.4 ave.) and leading all freshmen with 598 rushing yards and 78 points. Edwards was named to the conference honorable mention team.

Ralph Harris, East Texas Baptist head coach, was named ASC Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers to a share of their first conference title and a first-ever berth in the NCAA III Football Championship.
