ASC FOOTBALL – WEEK 7

Mary Hardin-Baylor, Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, Mississippi College and 59-year-old Mike Flynt and Sul Ross State all came away with wins in Week 7 of the ASC football season on Saturday (Oct. 13). UMHB’s victory coupled with HSU’s win over East Texas Baptist moved the Cru into sole possession of first place in the league standings. UMHB (6-0, 5-0 ASC) rushed for 420 yards of offense and forced Louisiana College (2-4, 1-3 ASC) to turn the ball over six times in a 70-14 home win. UMHB, which is ranked No. 2 in all three national polls and is the league’s only unbeaten team, has now outscored opponents 332-80 this season and has not allowed anyone to 20 points. HSU (3-3, 3-1) spoiled ETBU’s perfect run through conference play and out of a tie atop the ASC standings with a narrow 26-24 road win. The Tigers (4-3, 4-1 ASC), who had closed in and created the final margin with 9:47 left to play, have still never beaten the Cowboys. McMurry (2-5, 1-4 ASC) got into the conference win column with a 34-24 road victory against turnover-plagued Howard Payne (0-6, 0-4 ASC). The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over eight times. Sul Ross State (4-2, 2-2 ASC), fresh off its bye week, came away with a 45-42 home victory against Texas Lutheran (1-6, 1-4 ASC) that needed three overtimes. The game played in front of 2,351 also featured the season debut of Flynt, who saw action on all of the Lobos’ extra-point and field goal attempts – including Michael Van Waggner’s 41-yard game winner. The two teams had met earlier in the season, only it was a non-conference affair then but SRSU also won a tight one, 33-31. Mississippi College (5-1) became the league’s second team to reach five wins overall with a non-conference 50-7 road victory over LaGrange.
