Mary Hardin-Baylor, Hardin-Simmons, Mississippi College, McMurry and Howard Payne all recorded wins on Saturday (Sept. 11), giving the American Southwest Conference 10 victories through the first two weeks of play with conference action beginning next week. East Texas Baptist, Texas Lutheran, Sul Ross State and Louisiana College came up short in the only week on the league’s slate that features nine different games.
Redlands 21, East Texas Baptist 10: The Tigers squandered three quality scoring chances in the first half and the Bulldogs came out after halftime with two straight scores to go on and spoil ETBU’s home opener in Marshall, Texas. The Tigers (1-1) committed two turnovers in Redlands territory and has a drive end on downs inside the 20-yard line. ETBU quarterback Sed Harris ran for 69 yards and passed for 99 but did not find the endzone. ETBU’s Jon Chitty had a game-high 14 tackles and led a unit that yielded just 55 rushing yards to Redlands (1-0).
Mary Hardin-Baylor 24, UW-La Crosse 19: The nationally-ranked Cru dug itself out of a 19-point deficit and went on to earn a season-opening win over the Eagles on the road in La Crosse, Wisc. UMHB (1-0) used a LiDarral Bailey touchdown pass to David Wasserman, a Darius Wilson 3-yard TD run, a Quincy Daniels 3-yard scoring run and a 35-yard field goal by Alan Munoz over the last 23 minutes to seal the victory. Daniels finished with 144 yards on 27 carries, while Bailey totaled 138 yards passing in relief of starter Kyle Noack. Jerrad Jefferson had nine tackles for UMHB, which allowed just 218 yards of total offense. Lee Lauters had 99 yards on 25 carries for UWL (0-2).
Austin College 20, Texas Lutheran 14: The Bulldogs found themselves in a 20-point hole they could not quite come out of as the host Kangaroos spoiled the head coaching debut of Danny Padron in Sherman, Texas. TLU (0-1) got two late touchdown passes from Mitchell Bunger over the last two quarters and had the ball on the Austin College 35-yard line as time expired. Robert Salinas had nine catches for 133 yards and a score for the Bulldogs. Matt Finke had two interceptions for AC (2-0), which overcame being held to only four yards of rushing in the second half.
Western New Mexico 35, Sul Ross State 32: Lobos quarterback Monte Morales threw for 492 yards and five touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as the visiting Mustangs escaped with a victory in Alpine, Texas. SRSU (0-1) was doomed by two extra-point attempts and a field goal that were blocked as well as going just 1-for-3 on two-point tries. BJ Vickers (198 yards, three TDs) and Lee Carothers (190 yards, two TDs) each had eleven receptions for SRSU. Chris Voller threw for three TDs for WNMU (1-1) and his favorite targets were Brendon Tunstall (158 yards) and Salvador Garcia (125 yards). Earnest Jones had 10 tackles for the Lobos, who trailed 21-12 at halftime.
Hardin-Simmons 31, Willamette 22: The Cowboys used a 46-yard touchdown pass from Justin Feaster to Travis Tatsch with 8:20 to play to seal a battle between nationally-ranked squads in Abilene, Texas. HSU (2-0) never trailed but never led by more than 11 points. Scott Schettgen totaled eight catches for 222 yards and three TDs for Willamette (1-1). HSU got nine tackles and three pass break-ups from Caleb Chirstian, who paced a unit that held the traditionally run-heavy Bearcats to under 100 yards on 32 attempts. Ralph Pineda had a game-high 17 tackles for Willamette.
Mississippi College 21, Belhaven 14: Junior defensive lineman Brad Holt came up with a sack on fourth-down and 10 from his own 11-yard line with 2:06 left to help the nationally-ranked Choctaws seal a home-opening victory in Clinton, Miss. Holt and company yielded just 54 rushing yards to Belhaven (2-1). MC (2-0) built up a 14-0 lead at halftime thanks to a pair of TD passes from Tommy Reyer, who also rushed for a score in the third quarter. Austin Divinity racked up 107 yards on 16 carries for the Choctaws. Belhaven’s Michael Johnsa made a game-high 15 tackles.
McMurry 64, Texas College 0: Jake Mullin was 23 of 34 passing for 411 yards and tied ASC records with seven TD tosses and eight scores accounted for in a rout in the home-opener for McMurry in Abilene, Texas. Mullin, whose other score came on a 3-yard run, did not throw an interception and played just three quarters. McMurry (2-0) got 74 yards receiving or better from Marcus Frankiln (three TDs), R.J. Long, Eric Shaffer and Delfonte Diamond. Corey Hall had six tackles and 1.5 sacks to lead a McMurry defense that allowed just 54 yards of offense and pitched its first shutout since 2006. Texas College fell to 0-3 and has now been outscored 188-3 this season.
Huntingdon 62, Louisiana College 56 (OT): Courtney Moss had an 18-yard touchdown run in overtime to spoil the Wildcats’ home-opener that featured 1,159 yards of offense in Pineville, La. LC (2-0), which has lost two straight games by a touchdown or less, was turned away without a score on the first overtime series. It took three plays to prevail for Huntingdon (2-0), which got four TD runs by Moss and 154 receiving yards and two scores from Cody Pearcy. Ben McLaughlin was 27-for-50 with 489 yards passing and four TDs without an interception for the Wildcats. His favorite targets were Jordan Rideaux (137 yards) and DeMario Parker (114 yards). Nate Janzen returned a fumble recovery 51 yards for a score and LC’s final lead, 56-49, with 7:09 to play.
Howard Payne 32, Southwestern Assemblies of God 7: Zach Hubbard threw for 340 yards and 14 different Yellow Jackets caught a pass as HPU cruised to a home-opening victory in Brownwood, Texas. The game was delayed for two and a half hours due to lightning with just 9 minutes having gone by. HPU (1-1) racked up 604 yards of offense and 32 straight points after SAGU (0-2) got the scoring going on a 4-yard TD run by Jason Rice late in the first quarter. Demetrius Cody paced the Yellow Jackets on defense with eight tackles, two forced fumbles and a pass break-up.
