SCRANTON, Pa. — Diversified Information Technologies (Diversified) today announced Ben McLaughlin, a senior quarterback at Louisiana College, the winner of its 17th annual Melberger Award. The award recognizes outstanding athletic performance and is one of the highest individual honors bestowed in NCAA Division III football.

McLaughlin, who earned his undergraduate degree from Louisiana College in spring 2009, led the Wildcats to a 7-3 record as a graduate student this season while also working full time as a math teacher at Bolton High School in Alexandria, La. He was named the American Southwest Conference offensive player of the year, ranked 18th in passing efficiency (159.93), was the national leader in passing yardage (3,770 yards) and threw 42 touchdown passes in the 2010 regular season.

The Melberger Trophy, which is named after Diversified’s founder and chairman, Clifford Melberger, is a carving made of pure anthracite coal that is indigenous to Melberger’s home area in northeastern Pennsylvania. Melberger served as captain of the Bucknell University football team in 1960 when the team won the Lambert Trophy.

“Ben is a fantastic quarterback who also happens to be a remarkable leader and community servant,” said Scott Byers, Diversified president and CEO. “His athletic performance is trumped only by his excellent sportsmanship both on and off the field. Ben is well-deserving of the 2010 Melberger Award, and it is my pleasure to present it to him on behalf of Diversified.”

Melberger Award winners from the past five years include:
• Brett Elliot (2005) – Linfield College in Oregon
• Chris Sharpe (2006) – Springfield College in Massachusetts
• Jason Blotus (2007) – Hartwick College in New York
• Nate Kmic (2008) – Mount Union College in Pennsylvania
• Alex Tanney (2009) – Monmouth College in Illinois
