Louisiana College, Hardin-Simmons, McMurry and Mary Hardin-Baylor all earned American Southwest Conference football victories on Saturday (Oct. 8). Other than LC’s 31-24 win over East Texas Baptist, all games were decided by at least 19 points. Only Texas Lutheran was idle. Just five weeks remain in the regular season. UMHB and TLU have yet to lose a conference game, while LC and McMurry have suffered a league defeat just once.
No. -/24 Louisiana College 31, East Texas Baptist 24: Jamie Bunting threw three touchdown passes – two to Darnell Williams – and the Wildcats erased a 10-point halftime deficit to record a home win in Pineville, La. LC (4-1, 2-1 ASC), which trailed 24-14 at the break, got a shutout from its defense in the second half. Taylor Cottano made 12 tackles, while Peter Ford added 10 stops, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery to lead the effort. A 41-yard Bunting-to-Williams scoring pass in the second half was sandwiched by a CerDerrick Tyson 2-yard TD run and a 24-yard Adan Olivares field goal to provide the final outcome. ETBU (2-4, 1-3 ASC) got 97 yards and two TD runs by Jair Stover and 10 tackles from Alex Cloudy.
Hardin-Simmons 33, Howard Payne 14: Steven Rockwell ran for 152 yards and four touchdowns and the Cowboys shook off an early deficit to roll to a home victory that had a delayed start due to inclement weather in Abilene, Texas. HSU (3-3, 1-3 ASC), which trailed 14-7 at the end oif the first quarter, also broke a three-game losing streak. Rockwell scored in each quarter. The HSU defense, led by Garrison Hardin’s two fumble recoveries and forced fumble, pitched a shutout after halftime. Logan Simpson totaled 139 yards on punt returns to also fuel the Cowboys. HPU (1-5, 1-3 ASC) had first-quarter TD runs by D.L. Brake and Marcus McAdoo, while Demetrius Cody had a game-high 12 tackles.
McMurry 41, Sul Ross State 13: Jake Mullin threw four touchdowns – two to both R.J. Long and Justin Johnson – and Greg Livingston took a kickoff back 92 yards for a score as the War Hawks cruised to a homecoming win in Abilene, Texas. The game was halted at 14:41 in the fourth quarter to due inclement weather. McMurry (4-2, 3-1 ASC), which has now won three straight games, utilized two fumble and two blocked punts to build an early 23-0 lead in the first quarter. Mullin finished 12 of 21 for 112 yards without an interception. SRSU (1-4, 0-3 ASC) has now lost three games in a row. The Lobos’ scores came on a Trevor Priest fumble recovery and a Dominique Carson 1-yard TD run.
No. 3/4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 35, Mississippi College 12: Utilizing two special teams touchdowns and a stingy defense, the nationally-ranked Cru stayed unbeaten with a road victory in Clinton, Miss. UMHB (5-0, 4-0 ASC) also got two rushing TDs from quarterback LiDarral Bailey and 138 yards from Darius Wilson. Geoff Myles took back a punt 72 yards for a score and Javicz Jones blocked a punt that was recovered by Elijah Hudson in the endzone. After allowing 10 points in the second quarter, UMHB’s defense clamped down to keep MC’s offense from scoring after halftime. Ty Dooley had 15 tackles, Jones finished with 11 stops and two interceptions, Silvio Diaz had two sacks and Korey Steward took a fumble back 52 yards for a score to fuel the effort. MC (2-3, 1-2 ASC) got 168 yards –118 rushing, 50 receiving – from Steven Knight, whose one score gave the Choctaws an early 7-0 lead in the second quarter.
