McMurry, Sul Ross State, Hardin-Simmons, Mary Hardin-Baylor and East Texas Baptist all recorded non-conference wins on Saturday (Sept. 10) but it was the War Hawks that stole the headlines. McMurry toppled NCAA Division I Texas-San Antonio 24-21 on television, on the road and in front of 31,634 fans at Alamodome. It was the first time a Division III team beat a D-I squad since 2000. Only Louisiana College was idle on the week before American Southwest Conference play begins.

McMurry 24, Texas-San Antonio 21: Jake Mullin found Delfonte Diamond from 32 yards out with 19 seconds to play to lift the War Hawks to an upset road win over an NCAA Division I opponent in San Antonio, Texas. UTSA (1-1) took a 21-17 lead with 3:02 left before Mullin engineered the 10-play, 82-yard game-winning drive. Mullin finished with 372 yards passing – 142 to Diamond – and also accounted for a rushing score. Will Morris paced McMurry (1-1) on defense with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. McMurry built up a 10-0 lead at halftime against Larry Coker’s Roadrunners.

Sul Ross State 13, Bacone 12: Alex Lovan kicked two field goals and Scotty Walden had an 11-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to lift the Lobos in Sweetwater, Texas. Bacone (0-3) had a chance for the last-second win, but a 46-yard field goal try was no good. Shawn O’Leary had six tackles – four for loss – and a sack to spearhead the defense for SRSU (1-1), which held the Warriors scoreless in the fourth quarter. Lee Carothers had 10 catches for 134 yards for the the Lobos, who snapped an eight-game losing streak dating back to last season.

No. 9 Hardin-Simmons 30, Willamette 24: Derrick Grant ran for 101 yards and Caleb Christian had 14 tackles as the Cowboys earned a road win in Salen, Ore. HSU (2-0) built up a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, but Willamette (0-2) fought back to pull within one score two different times, the latest coming in the third quarter. A Steven Rockwell TD run with 13:30 to play made it 30-17 to seal the victory. Jamal Agbor, Undra Hendrix and Bronson Buzzard also had double-digit tackles for the Cowboys.

Trinity 43, Texas Lutheran 14: The Bulldogs allowed 20 first-quarter points and mustered up just 230 yards of offense in a road loss in San Antonio, Texas. TLU (1-1) was down 34-0 before getting its first touchdown on a Dominique Hardaway pass from Mitchell Bunger with 9:46 left in the third quarter. Nyk McKissoc threw three touchdown passes for Trinity (2-0), which recorded seven sacks.

Southwest Assemblies of God 21, Howard Payne 15: The Yellow Jackets got a 75-yard fumble return for a touchdown from Demetrius Cody to take a lead with 1:17 to play, but the Lions answered with a nine-play, 63-yard drive for the win in Midlothian, Texas. HPU (0-2) managed just 205 yards of offense, but held SAGU (1-1) to 205. Cody had a game-high 12 tackles, including three for loss.

No. 5 Mary Hardin-Baylor 27, Wisconsin-La Crosse 20: LiDarral Bailey threw for a career-high 281 yards and set a school record with 22 completions to guide the Cru to a season-opening win at home in Belton, Texas. Bailey also ran for 78 yards for UMHB (1-0), which put up 511 yards of total offense on UW-La Crosse (0-2). The Cru took the lead for good, 24-20, on a 2-yard touchdown run by Darius Wilson with 12:27 to play. Javicz Jones had 12 tackles, while Ty Dooley added 11 stops for UMHB.

East Texas Baptist 54, Austin College 17: Jair Stover ran for 112 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers rolled to victory in their home opener in Marshall, Texas. ETBU (1-1), which built up a 51-3 lead after three quarters, set a school record for most points scored at Ornelas Stadium. ETBU’s Seth Hubbard tossed two TDs – one to Jacob Stone and another to Elias Kawesa. Randy Rasmussen had a game-high 14 tackles, while Jordan Hayes added 10 stops for the Tigers.

Belhaven 35, Mississippi College 31: The Choctaws fought back from a 35-17 deficit in the third quarter, but fell just short in a comeback bid to fall in Jackson, Miss. MC (1-1) got a 54-yard TD pass from Tommy Reyer to Randall Pharr with 11:45 to play and it would be the game’s final points scored. The Blazers (2-1) stopped MC on its next two possessions, with the last ending in an interception. Reyer finished with 205 yards passing and three scores. Dillon causey had 11 tackles for the Choctaws.
