ASC Football Standings
Texas Lutheran, Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry and Louisiana College all recorded American Southwest Conference victories on Saturday (Sept. 24) and did so by big margins. The closest game was the top-25 rivalry tilt between Mary Hardin-Baylor and Hardin-Simmons in which UMHB won 35-17 on the road. TLU, McM and LC all scored more than 50 points. Only Sul Ross State was idle.
Texas Lutheran 51, Howard Payne 13: The Bulldogs reeled off 44 unanswered points after an early deficit and rolled to a home victory in Seguin, Texas. TLU (2-0 ASC) improved to 3-1 overall for the first time since 1985. Quarterback Mitchell Bunger was 15 of 22 with no interceptions and passed and ran for a touchdown, while TLU’s defense scored twice – on a 47-yard fumble return by Darnell Bohannon-Bey and an 11-yard interception return by Kyle McNally – and got two sacks from Marcus Ferree. Allen Cain also added three field goals for the Bulldogs. HPU (1-3, 1-1 ASC), which led 13-7 after the end of the first quarter, got a big day from linebacker Demetrious Cody (16 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery).
No. 4/4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 35, No. 25/21 Hardin-Simmons 17: The Cru created two turnovers to help put together a 21-point third quarter and pulled away for a road victory in Abilene, Texas. UMHB (3-0, 2-0 ASC) has now beaten HSU (2-2, 0-2 ASC) ten straight times, including the NCAA playoffs. Andy McAteer and Allen Dixon each had interceptions in the third quarter that set up touchdown passes by LiDarral Bailey. Sandwiched in between was a 23-yard scoring scamper by Dariuus Wilson (two TDs) that allowed UMHB to distance its 14-10 halftime lead. Ty Dooley (15), Javicz Jones (13) and Brodrick Crain (10) each had double-digit tackles to fuel UMHB’s defense that allowed only one TD after the break. Travis Tatsch had nine catches for 108 yards and a TD for HSU, while Emmanuel Akers added 11 tackles and an interception.
McMurry 63, East Texas Baptist 31: Jake Mullin threw for 448 yards and four touchdowns to fuel an offense that racked up 753 total yards and the War Hawks exploded for 56 unanswered points to roll in their home opener in Abilene, Texas. McMurry (2-2, 1-1 ASC) trailed 17-0 until Mullin and Delfonte Diamond connected for a pair of touchdowns to close out the first quarter. Chris Simpson then had a 29-yard TD run at 10:03 in the second quarter to give the War Hawks a lead they would not relinquish. ETBU (1-3, 0-2 ASC) would not get on the board again until 11:09 to play on a Sed Harris TD pass to Elias Kawesa to make it 56-24. McMurry had catches from 13 different players. R.J. Long had seven grabs, while Eric Shaffer totaled 106 yards on four catches. McMurry’s Will Morris had a 29-yard interception return for a TD, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Louisiana College 52, No. -/23 Mississippi College 17: Ryan Montague ran for 200 yards, Daron Bartholom added 100 more and the Wildcats reeled off 38 unanswered points over the first three quarters to cruise at home in Pineville, La. LC (3-0, 1-0 ASC) totaled 589 yards of offense. Montague (12 carries) scored two TDs, while Bartholom (14 carries), Darnell Williams and Robert Williams each added one score. Jamie Bunting also threw for two TDs to help fuel the Wildcats’ attack. MC (2-2, 1-1 ASC) led 3-0 after its first possession, but didn’t score again until 3 second left in the third quarter on a Bryce Brewer 17-yard blocked put return. Chris Campbell’s field goal was the only offensive score for the Choctaws. Nate Janzen and Taylor Cottano each had 11 tackles to guide LC’s defense, which combined for five sacks.
